A flight was delayed for more than two hours on Thursday after a paranoid passenger suspected a professor writing out math equations was a terrorist, the academic says.
American Airlines confirmed with The Huffington Post that the Thursday evening flight from Philadelphia to Syracuse was delayed after a female passenger said she was sick and βexpressed some concernsβ about the behavior of a male passenger. Spokesman Casey Norton could not confirm the names of either person on the Air Wisconsin-operated flight due to privacy regulations.
But Guido Menzio, an Italian University of Pennsylvania economics professor told The Washington Post that he was the suspect. His seatmate tried making small talk while the flight was boarding, but he wasnβt particularly talkative because he was trying to work out equations on a notepad, Menzio said.
The person who complained could not tell the difference between Algebra and Al Queda.
Rising xenophobia stoked by the presidential campaign, he suggested, may soon make things worse for people who happen to look a little other-ish.

There is a probability that she mistook brackets, parentheses, and other math symbols as Arabic. Maybe it's Arabic Why blame the passenger?
While she may have made a genuine mistake, some of the comments to the article was really amusing.

Trump as a politician is a product of American fear and anger above all. In the past several weeks, a U.C. Berkeley student has been escorted off a Southwest Airlines flight because he was heard speaking Arabic, and an olive-skinned, curly haired Italian Ivy League economist was taken off an American Airlines flight because he was spotted scribbling mathematical calculations that his seatmate found suspicious.

Trump is against "Illegal" immigration, most of whom come via Mexico and people with terroristic intent sneaking into the country to cause harm, most from the troubled parts of the Muslim world!
