Thirty years ago.

Grenada's Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was deposed by his deputy Bernard Coard on October 14, 1983.

Mr Bishop's People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) had been in power since March 1979 when his New Jewel Movement overthrew Prime Minister Eric Gairy who was viewed as a dictator.

The PRG carried out leftist political, economic and social programs and built a modern international airport with aid from Cuba.

Championing workers' rights, women's rights and youth rights, Maurice Bishop enjoyed popular support.

On October 19, 1983, the 39-year-old Bishop was executed along with some close colleagues by a Coard-masterminded firing squad.

Shortly after, US marines invaded little Grenada, forcibly removed Coard's government and installed a puppet regime.

Coard and collaborators were arrested, tried, imprisoned for long periods but are now free.

Thirty years have passed but the whereabouts of Bishop's corpse is still a mystery.

Four years ago Grenada's international airport was renamed after Maurice Bishop.

To this day the charismatic Grenadian leader is remembered fondly by leftists throughout the Caribbean.
