Playing in fine style under excellent golf course and weather conditions, veteran and senior golfer Maurice Solomon played a great game to emerge the champion in the Sanjay’s Jewellery Classic Golf tournament of Saturday last. According to Maurice, “In this tournament I particularly kept my head down during play – a regular fault being that I would lift my head. This discipline paid off well, and was enhanced by a quite reasonable short game, causing me to bring in a good net score!” Mr. Sanjay Persaud indicated specifically how happy he was to note that in all the day’s fierce competitiveness, this tournament was won, for the first time, by a senior member of the Club.

As he distributed prizes and congratulated the winners, Mr. Sanjay Persaud – owner of Sanjay’s Jewellery Store of 48 Sheriff St, Campbelville, who has always been there for the club in the past six years – expressed appreciation also for the involvement of the golfers in this tournament, pointing out that Mr. Brian Hackett was the one who introduced him to sponsoring golf tournaments. Moreover, he was going to sponsor a larger tournament in October for his birthday, so golfers could look forward to that. Also on hand was Director Pavita Ramkissoon, who pledged that Sanjay’s Jewellery would continue to support the Lusignan Golf Club and sponsor tournaments.
President Aleem Hussain expressed his delight at Sanjay’s continued sponsorship, thanked them for it, and indicated that the many developments taking place around the Club included plans for a refurbished Clubhouse, with extended kitchen and superb Restaurant and dining facilities, as well as the availability of the facilities for conferences and social activities. He subsequently gave Mr. Sanjay and Director Pavita a brief tour of the Clubhouse.
The results of the day’s tournament were as follows: Nearest to The Pin – Mohanlall Dinanauth. Best Gross was decided on a Back 9 Count-back since Mike Mangal tied with Avinash Persaud for gross 75. Mangal won with 36 against Persaud’s 38 on the count-back. Best Net places were: 1st – Maurice Solomon 65/25, and 2nd Mike Mangal 67/8. 3rd and 4th places were decided on a Back 9 count-back since three golfers, Brian Hackett, Assrodeen Shaw and Richard Haniff tied for net 70. From that count-back places were 3rd Brian Hackett 70/19; and 4th Aasrodeen Shaw 70/18.
So keen was the day’s competition that even net scores of 71, 72 and 73 had ties. Tying for net 71 were Moahanlall Dinanauth 71/6 and Parmanand Persaud 71/11.
