Iraqi troops close in on Islamic State redoubt in Ramadi

December 26, 2015.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi troops have pushed deeper into the heart of the last remaining district held by Islamic State in the city of Ramadi, despite being slowed by bombs and booby traps, army spokesmen said on Saturday.

Recapturing Ramadi, which fell to the militants in May, would be one of the most important victories achieved by Iraq's armed forces since Islamic State swept across a third of the country in 2014.

Soldiers advanced overnight in the Hoz neighborhood that houses the provincial government compound, the target of an attack that started on Tuesday, joint operations command spokesman Brigadier Yahya Rasool said.

"The counter-terrorism forces are within 800 meters (0.5 mile) from the government complex," advancing by about 1 km in the past day, Rasool said. "Air strikes helped detonate explosive devices and booby-trapped houses, facilitating our advance," he added.

Special operation commander Sami al-Aridhi said the plan was "to liberate all of Ramadi from three sides".

"Our troops are now advancing towards their targets but were delayed because the criminals have booby-trapped everything," he said.

Ramadi is a provincial capital in the fertile Euphrates River valley, just two hours drive west of Baghdad. Most remaining civilians in the Islamic State-held central district have taken shelter in the city's hospital, knowing that the army will not target it, Rasool said.

He declined to give a time frame for the final onslaught to dislodge the militants. "The campaign's priority is to avoid casualties among civilians and the troops, no matter how long it takes," he said.About 120 families were rescued from the combat zone on Saturday after securing safe routes for their exit and they were taken to a camp near Habbaniya, north of Ramadi, according to a military statement broadcast on state TV.

Military officials had said on Wednesday the offensive to retake the central district should take several days.

The Iraqi government forces are backed by air support from an international coalition led by the United States. Shi'ite militia units backed by Iran, which have played a major part in other government offensives, have been kept away from the battlefield in Ramadi to avoid angering Sunni Muslim residents. The city is the capital of mainly Sunni Muslim Anbar province. The government said it would be handed over to the local police and to a Sunni tribal force once it was secured.Ramadi was Islamic State's biggest prize of 2015, abandoned by government forces in May in a major setback for Baghdad and for the Iraqi troops that have been trained by the United States since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

After Ramadi, the army plans to move to retake the northern city of Mosul, the biggest population center under Islamic State control in Iraq and Syria.

Dislodging the militants from Mosul, which had a pre-war population close to 2 million, would effectively abolish their state structure in Iraq and deprive them of a major source of funding, which comes partly from oil and partly from fees and taxes on residents.

"The liberation of dear Mosul will be achieved with the cooperation and unity of all Iraqis after the victory in Ramadi," Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Friday.

If Putin did not intervene in Syria and then offered a hand to Iraq, Obama would still be asleep twiddling his thumb.  In fact, Russia is said to be in touch with former Baathist military loyalist offering to bring them in from the cold.  The agreement between Russia and Qatar over Syria indicates something on the ground with the Sunnis.  The fact that Sinjar and Ramadi are left with only foreign jihadist fighters signals that the local Sunnis are pulling back from ISIS.

Anyway, regardless, it's good to see ISIS on the back foot for a change, Obama or no Obama!

Could be, let's see.

So baseman, this post of yours has only one thing in mind - Obama is useless in the war against ISIL.

Well, let's look at your statements one by one.

If Putin did not intervene in Syria and then offered a hand to Iraq, Obama would still be asleep twiddling his thumb.

baseman, this is from the US Department of Defense on their current operations involving airstrikes.

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve....

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Syria include the United States, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

I don't see Russia in there.

Also, baseman, Russia was invited into Syria under the defense pact with Syria. It has nothing to do with the government of Iraq. therefore if it is not part of a coalition over the Iraqi airspace then they are not participating in any strikes there.

So baseman, you lie with this statement.

===========================================

In fact, Russia is said to be in touch with former Baathist military loyalist offering to bring them in from the cold.

If you know the history of the Baathists in Iraq you would know that is as silly as the PNC reaching out to join forces with the PPP.

===========================================The agreement between Russia and Qatar over Syria indicates something on the ground with the Sunnis.

While Russia and Qatar agreed on diplomacy efforts to encourage Assad (Russia's friend) to taalk to Rebel forces (whom Qatar supports), this does not signal bringing the Sunnis in from the cold. The Sunnis are regular people. ISIL are former Baathists (secular) and Al Qaeda types (like Bhagdadi, who are heretics of Islam and has nothing to do with regular Sunnis). Russia wants nothing to do with these people, as they help[ Assad survive - Russia's primary goal.

So, baseman, you mislead out of ignorance and a pathetic hatred for Obama and pure Trumpian bigotry.

===========================================

The fact that Sinjar and Ramadi are left with only foreign jihadist fighters signals that the local Sunnis are pulling back from ISIS.

I mentioned that Sinjar was a success story for the Kurds back in November. Why would there be foreign Jihadis hanging around there with the Kurds in control?

baseman, Ramadi is in play now and soon to fall to the IRaqi forces and will be handed over to local Sunni authorities - a condition of Obama authorizing air strikes over Ramadi to help the Shiite Iraqi forces retake it.

Where do you see local Sunnis supporting ISIS and then pulling back from them?

baseman, you mislead yet again.

You have been exposed yet again.

From the man whose education is all Google; all the time - know what I mean, you despicable person?

You don't follow the news, you listen but hear what you choose then muddle it with a lot of crap talk from Obama and Hillary.  The Obama admin warned the Iraqis about accepting the Russian offer and sent high-level military advisors to Bhagdad to engage the Iraqi leadership.  The Iraqis complained about US lack of direct engagement thus ineffective airstrikes.  Basically, the Iraqis was about to flip us the birdie!

Obama actually cared little about the bloodshed, he wanted the Syrian govt to be overrun as compensation to the Saudis/Qataris over the Iran nuke deal.  He supported the Libyan intervention on the pretext of a pending massacre in Benghazi by Gadaffi but was willing to sit back and see Shias, Alawites, Christians and other minorities ethnically cleansed at the hands of his Wahab allies in the terrorist House of Saud.  Then came Putin, and Obama finally grew up!

There's a lot of rambling lunacy in this post by baseman. Looks like it tough to get through a little bit of education to this numbskull.

Where are they going to get those numbers from? Also, you ramp up fighters with supply for those fighters. Three million fighters need over a billion a day to support. Where are they going to find that money not to mention supplies which they are already in short supply of.

They don't want the money. They want the seven virgins. It's not for sure whether they will get female virgins or male sausage eating virgins.

Their motivations do not erase the logistical necessities. They will need guns and ammunition and vehicles and food and that is beyond what they want otherwise.

By now, we know we are dealing with ruthless people. They can combat with mere head choppers. Fearsome were the Gurkas with knives and the French Africans with cutlasses.

The Mahabharat wars, people just plunged their fists into chests of their victims. Torn their hearts out and ate it.

All wars is about ruthless people. These sickos just happen to use the play book of Count Vlad with add ons to enhance their status as barbarian brutes.

Well Ramadi fully cooked. No ISIS fighter left. That means they have no access to Jordan, to Lebanon etc as the roads all cross here. Mosul is next. This is people fighting these beasts for their own lands.

Strangely, Obama seems to be making progress. He has strangled their cash flow and is suffocating their supply lines in every direction. Raqqa is cut off in every direction. He seems to be running the ball slowly butsurely to the goal.

Folks like Baseman and maybe Sagga bai will never be able to appreciate the commonsense approach of Obama because they waste too much time watching FoxNews.

It's not so much that Obama seems to be making progress in the fight against ISIL, but he himself has said he has under-sold the efforts his Administration has taken.

ISIL has lost territory since the US stepped up its air campaign. ISIL can no longer amass in public or in convoys or else they get blown up. Their oil trucks and oil wells  - infrastructure installations and transport - have been devastated. The financial avenues have been long closed. Obama has gotten the key player - the Shiite Iraqi government - to include Sunni leadership and keep the Shiite Mahdi brigade under close watch. These are the little things that go unnoticed.

Obama's challenge is that ISIL operate in places where civilians are like shields - they have no where to go and the US just can't bomb hundreds of thousands of civilians just to kill mere hundreds of ISIL fighters.

His other big challenge is in Syria where the effective opposition are Islamists, and the enemy continue to be ISIL. That's why he welcomes the Russian involvement and easing up on the Iranians (the nuclear agreement and sanctions easing) brings in another player to help with a diplomatic solution that will eradicate ISIL.

Trunp can blare all he wants, and fools here can chastise Obama for all they want - the progress is there to be seen. ISIL has lost territories. RThe ISIL inspired terror attacks in Europe and America will still be there even after ISIL is defeated, though like the diminution of Al Qaeda, such attacks will be less and less.
