Men remanded for robbing pastor

Two men were on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court Two of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after they appeared before her charged with armed robbery.

Jamal Thomas, 23, and Kenrick Cosia ,23, both pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on September 25 at Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, while being armed with a sharp object they robbed Pastor Sydney George of an iPhone4 valued at $140,000, a Samsung cellular phone valued at $4,000 and $3,000 cash, all to a total value of $147,000, property of the Virtual Complainant (VC), Sydney George.

The Court heard from Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones that the VC is a Pastor who works as a taxi-driver. He revealed that on the day in question, the two men entered the VC’s taxi as passengers and hired him to take them to a destination which was not revealed in Court.

During the course of the journey, the two accused placed a cold object to the VC’s neck while demanding that he hand over his valuables. They subsequently snatched the items and escaped but were soon after apprehended and charged.

Jones informed the Court that the phones as well as the $3,000 were recovered on the two accused. He objected to bail, citing the gravity of the offence.

The men, however, denied the allegation saying, “The items weren’t found on us”.

The Magistrate, after reviewing the facts of the charge, remanded the men to prison and adjourned the matter until October 16.
