In an era where sponsorship for Sports is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, the outstanding work of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS, continues to attract the support of corporate Guyana. On Thursday last Metro Office Supplies handed over a cheque to Patron of the Club, President David Granger for $200,000 as the Company renewed its cricket sponsorship of the Rose Hall Town Metro Female Cricket Team for the 10th successive year.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster speaking in front a mammoth crowd at the Area β€˜H’ Ground during a special Rose Hall 175th Anniversary Ceremony, hailed Metro Office Supplies as a long standing friend of Guyana’s leading Youth and Sports Club. Metro has been sponsoring the team since its formation in 2007 and the Rose Hall Town Metro Team remains the only female cricket team in Guyana.
The team in 2009 won the only ever National Female Championship and over the years has produced a total of two West Indies players, ten national senior players, fifteen national junior players, while a total of 29 has played for Berbice. Shemaine Campbelle, Plaffiana Millington and Shabika Gajnabi have captain Guyana at different levels, while among the other players produced by the sponsorship are Erva Giddings, Melanie Henry, Nikita Toney, Miriam Samaroo, Dian Prahalad, Uma Matadin, Aleema Arokium, Shaneeta Grimmond, Trishanie Cort, Deborah Vanderstoop, Roshella Lynch and Jacklyn Singh who have all represented Guyana. The present captain is West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle, while her deputy is her West Indies counterpart Erva Giddings. Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Executive member Elizabeth Brusch serves as the Manager, while the coach is former national cricketer Delbert Hicks.
Foster expressed total frustration that no other cricket club in Guyana has found the time to establish a cricket team for females and stated that it is a sad reflection of lack of commitment and vision. The long serving Secretary/CEO proudly stated the both male and female cricketers of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club worked together and enjoy a remarkable relationship.
With no cricket being played in Berbice due to lack of leadership from an ailing Berbice Cricket Board, the Management of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club arranges matches for its teams every weekend at the Area β€˜H’ Ground and this allows the female cricketers to develop quickly as they have to play with their male counterparts. He expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of Metro Office Supplies especially Chief Executive Officer Avia Lindie and Manager of the New Amsterdam Branch Danny Ramnarine for their co-operation.
Captain of the Metro Female Team Shemaine Campbelle in an invited comment expressed pleasure at the renewal of the sponsorship and pledged to make Metro proud on and off the cricket field. The support of the Company, Campbelle stated has been responsible for the rapid development of each of the female cricketers. The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, the West Indies allrounder stated has invested heavily into the careers of its female members and she issued an appeal to all major cricket clubs to do likewise for Guyana’s female cricket to become a major force in the Caribbean.
Manager of Metro’s New Amsterdam Branch, Danny Ramnarine hailed the Company’s investment as a productive one as the Rose Hall Town Metro Female Team has represented the brand very well.
The Female cricketers have been outstanding ambassadors for the Company, he stated, while urging the team to uphold its high standard.
