Mexico’s designated Ambassador to Guyana, and Plenipotentiary Representative to CARICOM, Francisco OlguÍn, paid Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally a courtesy call last Monday.

Dr. Surujbally used the opportunity to update Mr. Olguin specifically on issues associated with: (i) the ongoing third cycle of continuous registration, and (ii) preparations for Local Government Elections, should the latter become possible following finalization of the outstanding Local Government reforms.

It was felt that preliminary discussions could be embarked upon in areas of possible mutual support between the Guyana Elections Commission and the Institute of Federal Elections (IFE) of Mexico, as well as efforts could be initiated towards acquiring International Standards Organisation (ISO) certification pertaining to the conduct of elections.

Mr. Olguin assured Dr. Surujbally of his commitment to support GECOM in every possible way pertaining to the conduct and validity of elections in Guyana.
