Deal with Mexico paves way for asylum overhaul at U.S. border

The Trump administration has won the support of Mexico’s incoming government for a plan to remake U.S. border policy by requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims move through U.S. courts, according to Mexican officials and senior members of president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s transition team.

The agreement would break with long-standing asylum rules and place a formidable new barrier in the path of Central American migrants attempting to reach the United States and escape poverty and violence. By reaching the accord, the Trump administration has also overcome Mexico’s historic reticence to deepen cooperation with the United States on an issue widely seen here as America’s problem.

The White House had no immediate comment.

According to outlines of the plan, known as Remain in Mexico, asylum applicants at the border will have to stay in Mexico while their cases are processed, potentially ending the system Trump decries as “catch and release” that has until now generally allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer U.S. soil.

While a temporary approach, there are numerous hurdles to overcome to make this approach a reality.

Among the major issues are funding for this program, e.g., will the United Nations and/other organizations fund this approach, etc., etc., etc..

Yes, including the Canadians and who seem very concerned and supportive of their cause.  It's no longer a US issue, it's international.  Other countries, including Canada, can also offer asylum to some of them.

You will indeed see/observe that Canada offers immediate assistance to refugees that enters the country.

This matter relates strictly to the US_of_A where individuals are seeking the needed assistance.

While Canada as a country offers assistance, the people from all walks of life band together to assist the individuals in every possible way.

And we are all happy and proud of Canada for that!

Canada is looking for any person that looks white to increase their white population. That is the reason that they brought Syrians. These Central Americans will eventually be admitted to Canada because most of them can pass for white.
