Mid-year Financial report shows growth in mining sectors but major declines in agriculture sectors

In terms of projection for the rest of the year, gold declaration is set at 650,000 ounces while the outlook for Gross Domestic Product is set at 4% which is in line with the IMF prediction but down from the budgeted forecast of 4.4%.

Mid-year Financial report shows growth in mining sectors but major declines in agriculture sectors

Finance Minister Winston Jordan will later today lay the 2016 Mid Year Report on the performance of Guyana’s economy in the National Assembly, when the House meets for the final sitting before the annual recess.

The Finance Minister said the document presents more bad news for the naysayers as he pointed out several highlights of the report at a Monday morning press conference.

Jordan boasted that this was the first time that this report was being presented before the annual Parliamentary recess which usually convenes on August 10.

On the up side, the economy grew by two percent which was up from the 0.9% growth it recorded for the first half of 2015.

Jordan described the performance of the economy as “very good” and attributed the overall growth to the successes of the mining and quarrying sector which grew by 65.7%.

He said gold production increased by 93.3% while bauxite grew by 2.2%.

Other crops and fisheries also recorded a 2% growth while revenue collection grew by 9%. Exchange rates have remained stable.

But there was also bad news to report, with the agriculture sector contracting by 10%.

This, Minister Jordan said, is due to the huge shortfall in sugar and rice production which were down by 30% and 26% respectively.

As a consequence, the manufacturing sector also experienced a 14.1% contraction.  Inflation stands at 1.1% at the end of the first half.

In terms of projection for the rest of the year, gold declaration is set at 650,000 ounces while the outlook for Gross Domestic Product is set at 4% which is in line with the IMF prediction but down from the budgeted forecast of 4.4%.

The slight reduction in the overall projection, Jordan explained, is because there is belief that sugar and rice will not recover from the fairly high shortfall from the first half of the year.

The Minister said the country’s reserves are healthy and reported growth in broad money, increases in credit to the private sector and overall lending.

More details on the economy’s performance for the first half of 2016 will be revealed when the document is laid int he National Assembly later today. “We didn’t skimp on details,” he added.

Jordan said the government believes this is a huge accomplishment in keeping with its mantra to improve transparency and accountability in government.

This shows the frailty of the Guyana economy and the fact that much of our manufacturing base is tied to very limited and basic processing of rice and sugar.

Yes our 1946 economy remains intact in 2016.  Gold is up because of large Canadian operators who employ few people. When that gold is mined out that activity ends, or when prices drop again and the Canadians decide that it makes no sense to continue their Guyana operations.

The PPP failed to transform the economy and it appears as if APNUAFC lack the creativity or innovativeness to do better.

Tough to swallow heh? Who's planting rice and working the sugar cane fields? Long live the PNC. Progress for Guyana through the 21st century. Make Guyana great again!

Well they aren't doing too good a job.   No one wants our sugar as it is too expensive, and our rice is also not competitive.  Rice is hugely popular in the Americas and yet under the PPP finding markets was difficult.

BTW note that is the mining sector which is performing, given that you want to get into a racial competition.

I guess the extreme droughts of the first half of 2016 had nothing to do with the downturn in agricultural output. The government must now be in control of the weather whereas in the years when the PPP was busy destroying the sugar industry there was not even a boo to be heard from you people.

Why not? The PPP was responsible for the droughts and flooding. What is good for the goose is also good for the gander.

Years of PPP neglect caused garbage and silt to build up in drainage canals and other means of water outflow. This was the complaint against the PPP government for years and they turned a deaf ear. Since the coalition government cleaned up Georgetown, the flooding situation in the city has been better. There is not much you can do to reverse drought conditions.

Yes Skeldon I know how hard life is for you.  After 23 years of screaming "ahbe pan tap, black man time done".

After sneering at D2 when he warned you that a growing mixed population, combined with a black population which isn't shrinking as rapidly as the Indian population, might lead to a rude awakening.

Well Jagdeo ran around screaming on behalf of his "coolie people party", terrified blacks and mixed to vote, and vote they did, and here you are now wailing "black man a kill ahbe".

When facts hit you, you babble on and on with your black KKK mantras. Carry on!

And this from the man who screams "black man a kill ahbe" and then calls me a racist when I rub it into his face when the killers are found to be Indians.

You and the rest of your gang should really address the fact that when Indians kill 99% of the time its another Indian who they kill.  I cannot recall Indian criminals attacking blacks.

Why do you all people treat your own so badly? We can go on to discuss the sex trafficking of young Indo girls, usurious interest followed by land seizures of poor rice farmers, and other forms of Indo on Indo abuse.
