Mikhail Kalashnikov made a difference in the world, for better or for worse.

His simple, cheap and efficient AK-47 assault rifle enabled freedom fighters in Africa and other colonies secure political independence from European states, particularly the Portuguese possessions. Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau got their freedom largely thru the barrels of AK-47s.

A simple knife can be used to peel a fruit or kill a man.

A gun can be used to fight a just war or to terrorize innocent civilians.

I don't blame guns and I wouldn't blame Mikhail Kalashnikov.

Bookman, I agree with you about the AK-47.  It helped to free many countries in Africa from colonial rule.  The weapons were also used after the collapse of the Soviet bloc to bring in badly needed US foreign currency to former Eastern European Communist states.  Which found themselves with few exports that other countries needed. These countries swamped the African continent with AK-47s supplying any warlord in exchange for blood diamonds and other illegally obtained resources, which they then sold on the world markets for US foreign currency. The end result was many innocent people being killed.

Vish, the Bhagavad Gita tells the story of the Battle of Kurukshetra.

Lord Krishna advised General Arjune to go ahead and fight the opposing army, comprising Arjune's own relatives and friends.

They fought with weapons designed to kill humans.

The AK-47 is merely the 20th century version of assault weapons used in ancient wars. Someone has to make them.
