A mini football extravaganza starting from 3:00pm has been fixed for the Tucville ground today as the Mayor’s Cup football championship concludes with the grand finale.
The Aruwai first prize of $700,000 and the Mayor’s Cup is at stake in the feature event of the day starting at 9:00pm. Two outstanding teams in this tournament will collide for championship honours in what promises to be a keen encounter. The game brings together Western Tigers and Police. Before that at 7:00pm the third place playoff pits Federal Winners Connection against Ann’s Grove.
However, the day’s programme begins at 3:00pm with the Sparta Family sponsored7-a-side Inter Ward/Village competition for the Sparta Family trophy and $50,000 involving several teams. The fixtures for the 7-a-side will see Sophia facing Golden Grove in the opening match, while at 3:30pm Kingston battle Uitvlugt, Albouystown clash with Grove at 4:00pm and North East La Penitence challenge Buxton at 4:30pm. The winners advance for the chance to play for the cash prize. This segment should whet the appetite of fans for the evening’s main attraction.
Ann’s Grove with Nickosi Denny, Shamar Barry and Quincy Johnson will look to stave off the disappointment of not being in the final with a win in the third place game. However, Federal Winners Connection will also harbour similar thoughts. They will depend on Keon Sears and Marmaleque Davidson to head their charge in the absence of Rawle Gittens, who was suspended following a red card in the last match.
The main event will see the favourites, Western Tigers looking to turn back the challenge of giant killers Police. Lead goalscorer Dwayne McClennon (6), Randolph Wagner (4) and Dellon Kelly (3) along with Dwayne Ali will try to push Police to the limit and out of the reckoning for the title.
Police will have Quincy Holder, Dwayne Charles, Keron Boston, Dwain Wilson and Kester Dundas pushing their cause for title honours as they look to continue their giant killing status. Whichever way the game goes, fans are in for a treat all evening long.
The final winner will claim the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Top Brandz of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament. Apart from Aruwai Resort and Top Brandz, others on board include: Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed thanks to his sponsors, nothing that their support have been the lifeline.
