Despite being prevented from addressing the house during the 2014 budget debate by House Speaker Raphael Trotman, Minister of Education Priya Mancikchand insists that she did nothing out of the ordinary and stands by her refusal to apologize. The action taken against Manickchand was deemed as a severely harsh response by many who said that opposition heckling is far worse and that Trotman's action reeks with bias.
During Volda Lawrence's presentation in which she was advocating for girls and young women to be protected from men who often get away with statutory rape, Manickchand shouted from across the floor “Ask your member Sharma, ask your APNU Member Sharma!”
The Sharma in question is C.N Sharma who is currently before the court charged with raping several underage girls. The incident came to light in 2010 after the girls gave gruesome accounts of years of sexual abuse perpetrated by the Justice for All TV programme host. Sharma's Justice for All Party is also a member of the PNC's APNU and holds a parliamentary seat in the opposition benches which is occupied by his son. It was the younger Sharma who took offense at Manickchand's comment yesterday which led to Trotman's draconian intervention.
