Canal No.2 still under flood waters

…farmers incur millions in losses

By Rupadai Seenaraine

More than one week after the Canal Number Two area was completely inundated by heavy rainfall, residents are complaining that the water has not receded and they are facing significant losses.
Speaking with Guyana Times on Monday, residents voiced their plight, noting the impact the floodwaters have had on their livelihoods.
One of the affected residents, Mark Itwaru, recalled that he noticed the rising water level last Monday after hours of continuous rainfall. However, after one week, residents’ premises and farmlands are still inundated.
“Last week Monday, we had some terrible rainfall in the afternoon period and the

One of the farms that are currently under water

place was flooded. Within one o’clock to five o’clock, the place was flooded and from then to now, water is still on the land.”
He noted the water within the housing communities was receding very slowly, and the farms were facing tremendous losses since all of the produce was destroyed. Additionally, there was also damage to household items and appliances.
“By the housing area, the water receding very, very slow. Like every two day, then the water move one inch, but in the farmland everything is destroyed, because the water is not moving at all. Everybody is counting losses, even myself at present. I have over 800 pine plant that was about to bear and all is under water. Now they can’t bear, because the water is not running off the land,” Itwaru said. Meanwhile, another resident who identified himself as Ishmael (only name given), indicated that he rears livestock for a living and has faced over $200,000 in losses so far. That figure continues to grow as the days progress. “I don’t have anywhere to put them (the livestock) so I had to left them in the water and they dead out,” he related.
“I had three-acre banana and they look like they mightn’t make it ‘cause the water affecting roots and they falling down,” said another resident.
Some also say that the trenches are overflowing, which is adding to the slow drainage of the water. They are also blasting the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) of the Canal Polder for failure to address their concerns and turning a blind eye to their calls.
“The Canal Number Two trench full to its max and the RDC and not even the NDC is not budging. Nobody is coming forward to say anything about the flooding.”
While the main cause of the flooding was the heavy rainfall, the residents said that they were unable to say whether or not there was another underlying cause for the inundation.
“I don’t know if there’s any breach anywhere or by the conservancy, but I know that the rainfall was very heavy on last week Monday that can contribute to the flooding, but I don’t know if it was anything else,” said another resident.
Persons from the community are asking for the trenches to be dug so that the water can drain off the land. So far, they are still counting their losses and are expecting to do so until the water retreats.

Moses lives in luxury while ordinary Guyanese suffer. This conman was supposed to assist them and live a humble life like Janet and Cheddi.

Wait, is Moses busy cleaning Granger's Toilet ?

The PPP Ministers intervened and assisted during ALL floods.

PNC does not care about ordinary folks. They can only thief, cuss down, pull down parking signs and harass security guards.

Talk with sense, there were no local gov't elections, suh the Ministers were running the show.

After 2015 Local Gov't are in the hands of the people, only issue the elected PPP officials are clueless on how to manage.

Them like you they can only prattle.

This is a matter for the NDC and RDC to handle. The rainfall is seasonal. What did they do since the last one to prepare themselves for this recurring flooding?

What did these PPP dunces learn from the past floods?

That's because the RDC and NDC were predominantly PPP soupees who did nothing in preparation for the seasonal rainfalls and drought.  Jagdeo used the floods for photo ops and to beg for donations from the diaspora.

Yep, I got seeds already. I started them inside my house in April. I have a little greenhouse in my basement. I will send you some when the seeds are dry.

Dj, try throwing some black pepper around the Bhajee and cucumber trees. They tried it one year and never came back after an older gentleman told me about the black pepper trick.

What month did you plant ? I usually plant around the third week of May.

I heard that there is a shortage of fertilizer in Guyana in the summertime as a result of Mitwah's gardening. I wonder how Mitwah's gardening is related to that shortage ?

Try using potting soil and plant it in a pot.  I usually plant 2 and I have wiri wiri pepper for the rest of the year.😀

Yugi bhai, I use triple mix + cattle manure + sheep manure.  I do lots of container planting. For the containers, 1/2 bag potting soil mixed with 1/2 bag cattle/sheep manure plus about 1 to 2 litres of builders sand in the mix. The pots will need extra calcium and potassium. For the calcium you can add lime but I find Tums do the job and it is less expensive. I crushed up 1 tums and add it to 1 litre of water and treat the plants once a week. This will prevent the tomatoes, peppers and zuchs from developing end rots or falling off. I mix 1 spoon baking soda plus 1 spoon dish detergent to 1 gal of water and spray under the leaves once a week. This prevent the fungus, black spots from developing. The rose bushes may need more frequent spraying. For the squirrels, I spray with a garlic & Scotch bonnet pepper mixture. This also help with the slugs and snails.

I make use of the banana peels, egg shells, tea bags etc.

My friend from Banglore thinks my front yard is "madhuban" and the circular bed represents the "Circle of life".

Happy gardening.
