More people can be employed using the same amount of money

Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to ask Lincoln Lewis and other Union Leaders to not ask for hefty pay increases for workers as the money has to be found, by Guyana Government of the day, to pay for hefty pay awards. While I acknowledge that the working poor deserves a better standard of living and increased wages may help them to improve their circumstance; increase wages also put a lot of downward pressure on the Guyana dollar leading to devaluation over time. I suggest a 2.5 percent pay increase is reasonable, since inflation is below this level, and everyone likes a top-up now and again for their efforts.
It is time for our Unions to start looking at how we can increase workers productivity so that everyone will benefit without the hefty pay rises. Is it not better to have 10 people working for GYD600,000 (GYD6m total) each rather than to have eight people working for GYD750,000 (GYD6m total) with two people being unemployed?
I would also like to ask President David Granger to consider taking a pay cut.
