Mohammed Morsi Annuls Constitutional Amendment That Would Have Expanded His Power

According to several sources, Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi has annulled the constitutional decree he announced just weeks ago, which would have given him far-reaching state powers and immunity from judicial oversight.

According to the AFP, Islamist politician Selim al-Awa told a news conference that "the constitutional decree is annulled from this moment."

The decree, in combination with an equally controversial constitutional draft that will be voted on in December, have inspired large, violent protests in Cairo for days.

The Egyptian revolutionary change of Jan/Feb 2011 was initiated for the most part by the liberal youth movement. The Islamist Brotherhood lent this movement great organization. The military basically followed Obama's orders. When it came to elections the liberals did not organize and the Morsi's Brotherhood party became victorious. Morsi tried to reinforce Sharia law and the liberal youth movement came out in Tahrir Square again. The military still kept out, and Morsi backed down. It will get more interesting, especially as Morsi is the guardian of the peace with Israel and he has tremendous influence with Hamas in the Gaza as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon.
