Mosque riddled with bullets in shootout
JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- It was a frightening scene at a mosque in Jersey City and it was all captured on surveillance video.
A nearby shootout left the mosque riddled with bullets.
There were children and women standing outside when shots were fired.
Ramadan is the sacred holiday where Muslims pray and fast for a month.
It was just before midnight Monday night when the mosque on Montgomery Street in Jersey City became the backdrop for a violent and reckless shooting spree.
In the exclusive surveillance video, you see this man nervously edge towards the entrance. Seconds later shots are fired at him, he runs for his life, into the vestibule, through the holy prayer room, and then out a side door.
Caught in the middle of this wild shower of bullets were children and women who just finished their prayers.
The bullets ended up in the vestibule.
One bullet broke the glass, another pierced a steel gate, and the third bullet hit the outside bricks.
Two more bullets struck the cars parked out front, including one bullet which is still inside a headlight.
Authorities believe the gunmen were after a targeted man not the mosque.
Still, the mayor and police chief attended service Tuesday night to reassure the congregation.
Despite all the shots fired amidst all the innocent children, amazingly no one was hurt
Eyewitness News is told the shooters and their intended target are all believed to be from Newark
