Mother confirms Welshman was sexually assaulted

In a story of several intricate twists and intrinsic turns, Alisha Collymore, the mother of Johnny Welshman on Saturday confirmed that her son was sexually assaulted at a young age, supporting his claim that he was raped when he was 12 years old.

Welshman is accusing Speaker of the National Assembly and Alliance For Change (AFC) Co-Founder Raphael Trotman of sexually abusing him when he was a young boy, an allegation Trotman has out rightly denied.

Collymore, who is overseas-based, spoke with Guyana Times from her office. She explained that she was suspicious that her son might have been a victim of sexual molestation as result of his erratic behavioural pattern.

The mother said while she is trying to stay away from the whole fiasco, it is increasingly hard given the predicament her son has found himself in.

“I am trying to be very careful of who I speak with. I am really trying to not get involved in this whole medley.

“He was sexually molested as a child, he was, his behaviour patterns exhibit those of a child who was sexually molested,” said Collymore via the telephone interview.

On the other hand, Welshman’s father, Johnny Terry Welshman, has claimed that his son is not telling the truth, but that story was only reported in the Kaieteur News, known for defending Opposition politicians.

Meanwhile, Trotman made a very rare appearance at an AFC press conference on Friday, where he told reporters that he “will do what is right when the time comes”.

In light of this pronouncement, it could be assumed that the Speaker may resign from his post should any charge be laid against him.

The Speaker maintained he has not sodomised the boy, noting that he has total abhorrence for such acts.

Trotman, who became Speaker in 2011, was bombarded with questions on whether he would resign given the allegations against him.

He said in response that he has sought advice from legal minds overseas, noting that he will not leave based on mere allegations.

According to Trotman, he is a patriot and loves his work. He said he would do nothing to dent the work of the National Assembly and would do the right thing when the time comes.
