WITHIN the next two years, movie enthusiasts and shoppers alike in Guyana will finally be able to indulge in entertainment and shopping under one roof, at the MovieTowne multiplex cinemas and shopping centre.
This ‘mecca’ for movie lovers will be situated on 10 acres of prime land in Turkeyen, on the East Coast of Demerara, and promises to change the lives of Guyanese far and wide by offering a level of recreational leisure never before experienced.
According to the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, Trinidad and Tobago’s successful MovieTowne brand coming to Guyana is like a “breath of fresh air”, which will significantly boost the country’s growing tourism sector.
Chairman of Multicinemas Guyana Inc, Derek Chin, explains the layout of the cinema complex to President Bharrat Jagdeo and PPP/C Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar, during the launch ceremony.
He made this pronouncement during an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, last week, when he sought to highlight all of the advantages of such a massive investment in Guyana.
“This will add and promote tourism significantly in the field of entertainment; it is something that people need; dinner and a movie. And what makes it even more exciting, is that there will be the multiple cinemas to choose from,” Prashad explained.
During the official launch of the project earlier this month, with President Bharrat Jagdeo officiating, Chairman of Multicinemas Guyana Inc., Derek Chin, explained that the total investment in the project amounts to US$20M, which is expected to provide employment for 500-800 Guyanese, when completed.
As to the benefits of such a venture, the Head of State recognised that MovieTowne has an enormous reputation in Trinidad and Tobago, and has revolutionized entertainment in that country, and their operations here will serve as a very “important addition”.
He said, “In Guyana, we have made progress in almost every field, economic and social, and we have had greater income levels and even disposable income. We still have a gap where people are looking for entertainment for their family and everyone, and I think that MovieTowne will be able to fill that gap and to provide the service that thousands of Guyanese long for.”
Alluding to the implications of such a massive investment, Prashad said, “The investors are very serious and this augurs well, not only for tourism, but for the development of Guyana, as it will provide jobs and promote local businesses. Added to other developments, such as the four-lane highway, the bridging of the Corentyne River, and the Marriott Hotel, it will encourage more international recognition.”
Construction is set to begin next year, and the Chairman has assured that the company will be employing contractors from the local construction industry, with project management, design and engineering support from Trinidad.
Chin also indicated that, after the positive experiences in Trinidad and Tobago, the state-of-the-art movie multiplex brand is guaranteed to provide a number of benefits to the people of this country, including creating a social environment that promotes healthy entertainment, and at the same time creating a model for world class standards that can be used as a stimulus for other similar trade activity in Guyana.
“In addition, it will foster harmonious trade relations between Guyana and Trinidad; with these invaluable advantages and more, MovieTowne Guyana will emerge as a source of pride and satisfaction for all,” he assured.
MovieTowne Guyana will be the parent company’s first diversification outside of Trinidad and Tobago, and will be the fourth location in the pioneering franchise.
