Two men killed their wives and attempted suicide. One succumbed from ingesting poison, and the other was still living when they found him. I think he is better off dead than to be alive. Both stories made headlines in recent days in Guyana. Both families have children left behind to fend for themselves without a mother and father. As we speak more of this killing is happening to families in the homeland. We're here pissing ourselves with politics and put a blind eye on the dark reality in Guyana society. This story is not an isolated incident, and it caught my attention. This is serious, and something has to be done to build the family structure from further decay. This pattern of killing and suicide is becoming a trend. This problem crosses all political barriers, and it's a social issue that people needs to understand and find answers to the problem.

MAN KILLS REPUTED WIFE - attempts suicide by poisoning A THIRTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD mother of four, Mohanie Gobin, of Sparta, East Bank Essequibo, was murdered yesterday morning. Her dead body was found lying in a pool of blood in the storage room of her reputed husbandβs workplace, at the River Quest Jet Boat Service, Silver Beach, Roden Rust, also on the East Bank of Essequibo. It is reported that she suffered a fatal blow with a piece of metal inflicted by her reputed husband of ten years, Ramesh Sattaur, who later attempted to commit suicide by ingesting poison. Speaking to the media yesterday, at the location of the tragedy, the womanβs eldest son, Arjune Ramkishore said he received a call, just before 07:00hrs, informing him that his motherβs reputed husband had struck her on the head and she died. He said, when he arrived at the scene, there were several persons already there while his motherβs lifeless corpse lay in the blood. It was then taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, where her death was pronounced. The young man said he was told that after Sattaur lashed his mother, he drank the poisonous substance and fled into nearby bushes. However, he was later apprehended and taken for medical attention. Ramkishore said he last spoke with his mother earlier in the morning before she left for work, as she is employed as a domestic. ANY CONFRONTATION He was unaware that his mother and Sattaur were having any problems as he never saw them in any confrontation with each other. But he works in the interior and was not around the family much of the time. However, the 21-year-old said his information was that Sattaur went to his motherβs Mora home and they had an argument over a mobile phone, which the man took from her and carried to his place of employment. He said his mother had gone to manβs workplace to retrieve the phone when she met her demise. Meanwhile, at the home of the womanβs other three children and their father, other persons from the village commenced erecting a tent for holding a wake. Recalling how he and his wife separated, after 19 years together, the childrenβs father, Naculraj Ramkishore said it was due to the affair between her and Sattaur. He said he kept visiting the house to check on his children and in the hope of being able to reconcile with the woman and resume living in one house. He is presently living in Tuschen Housing Scheme, another part of East Bank Essequibo. He pledged to ensure that he remains strong for his children who are 21, 18, 17 and 15 years old. |
Murdered hairdresserβs husband kills self
- ingested poison, found in backdam with wounds
Kensley Thompson, the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Rhonda Thompson, took his own life yesterday almost in the same fashion in which he allegedly killed his spouse.
Police said that the 35-year-old carpenter and mason was found at around 06:45hrs yesterday at Hopetown Backdam, West Coast Berbice. He had reportedly slashed his throat and had also ingested a poisonous substance.
He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed around 11:00 hrs.
According to the police, βacting on information, and with the assistance of public-spirited persons, the police arrestedβ¦Kingsley Thompsonβ¦who was a suspect in this matter, at Hopetown Backdam.
βKingsley Thompson had some injuries that were believed to have been self-inflicted. He was also suspected to have ingested a poisonous liquid. He was taken to the GPHC where he later succumbed.β
Thompsonβs suicide occurred just a day after the body of his 32-year-old wife, cosmetologist and hairdresser Rhonda Thompson, was discovered by family members in a pool of blood at her Lot 6 Public Road home at Onderneeming, West Coast Berbice.
Rhonda Thompsonβs body was reportedly found in the dining room of her residence.
Police said that Thompson was found with a βgaping wound to her throatβ.
However, no murder weapon was found at the scene.
Reports suggest that the mother of one was slain when a little niece, who was with her, opened the door to let someone in. However, there are no reports of neighbours hearing or seeing anything suspicious.
At the time, police were unable to locate the victimβs husband, Kensley Thompson, a carpenter and mason, who also drives a vehicle for a church in the community.
Friends of the husband also tried unsuccessfully to reach the man on his mobile phone.
Close associates of the couple said that they had separated about three months ago, after Thompson learned that his wife was having an extra-marital relationship.
This newspaper learnt that the couple was heard arguing on Saturday.
The woman had lived with an extended family in the home, including cousins and her son. It is unclear whether they were at home when the incident happened.
Rhonda Thompson, originally from Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, had operated the New Look Hair Salon and Cosmetology School at her residence.
She leaves to mourn her 15- year- old son, Akeem.
In the past, I would hear drinking is a major factor in criminal behavior. These two stories have not mentioned anything about drinking, but simply a disagreement between the spouses. What disagreement would make a man kill his wife and try to take his own life?
Crime of passion is a major cause of such outcomes. One should not judge any situation, this happens in every nation, culture and among all races. I remembered such incidence all my life. It's sad, it's a pity and unfortunately will continue.
Are you going to solve this problem? Could anyone solve this type of social issue? You people wash your mouth on Guyana when in Canada and the US the same types of murder occur daily without any big hoopla in the press.

This is not solvable, just the way, not a specialty of Guyana.
No one can get rid of the problem altogether, but you can decrease the rate of domestic violence by offering social programs with the aim to helping people mend their problems. Guyanese are not fully in tuned with this kind of psychological intervention, but it will sink in with time. I am sure men who premeditated on murder would like an option to reverse his ill-fated plan.

I agree regarding callous DV, but crime of passion is tough. Every individual has their breaking treshhold and for very different reasons. But I agree with you on callous and everyday DV.
Guyanese would have to learn "pins and needles, needles and pins" and count to ten before striking. This simple remedy saved me from killing a dozen people.

Offering of social program is only as good as people willingly seeking out such programs and buying in to the concepts. Not to say it should not be done but I detest the superior attitude of many of you overseas Guyanese looking down on Guyana that you did nothing to help develop socially or otherwise.
Gurdle how come you rass so cratchity? Offer some suggestions nuh.

It is not for me to offer suggestions but rather the Guyanese people to decide their own fate. All the social advances in the Western world was achieved through trial and error, Guyana has to go through the same process, it can not be rammed down their throats.
