Nagamootoo unsure he can bring anything new to party

AFC nominated Presidential Candidate Moses Nagamootoo

AFC nominated Presidential Candidate Moses Nagamootoo

Alliance For Change (AFC) nominated Presidential Candidate Moses Nagamootoo said he was taking steps “one day at a time” in the push for the top post of the party.

Nagamootoo is among four other members of the minority Opposition party who were nominated to run for the presidential candidacy post during the party’s congress billed for the 25th of this month. The other candidates are: Cathy Hughes; her husband, Nigel Hughes; and the party’s leader, Khemraj Ramjattan.

In a telephone interview with Guyana Times on Thursday, Nagamootoo was asked if he was bringing anything new to the table as a presidential candidate.

The former People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) executive said it was premature to deal with that at this point, noting that he would not canvass himself as a candidate, but will deal with such matters at the appropriate time.

Nagamootoo, however, said he hoped that there would be an open and fair election process, when the party gets down to that during the Congress. He said that there were four nominees for the post, and noted that whoever comes out victorious would most certainly tell the nation what their plans are for the party and the country as a whole.

The AFC last week had announced that its National Executive Committee had received four nominations for the party’s presidential candidate at the next general elections and another four nominees for the post of Prime Minister, even as it prepares for General Elections early next year.

Those nominated for the Prime Ministerial Candidate post were Raphael Trotman, Nigel Hughes, Cathy Hughes, Dr Verasammy Ramayya, and David Patterson. The decision on who will be elected the Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates will be made when the party holds its biennial National Conference later this month.

Moses Veerasammy Nagamootoo, a former teacher and journalist, was elected to Parliament in 1992 as a PPP/C Member of Parliament (MP).

He served as Minister of Information and Local Government and remained in Cabinet under the presidencies of Cheddi Jagan, Samuel Hinds, Janet Jagan and Bharrat Jagdeo.

He resigned as Minister in 2000, but remained an MP until 2011 when he resigned from the PPP, joining the AFC in October 2011 and being re-elected to Parliament.

There is consensus about the deplorable state of the nation, but what about the solution?

December 30, 2014 | By  | Filed Under Letters
DEAR EDITOR, As Guyanese say goodbye to 2014, corruption, crime, poverty, growing disagreements, unease and tension may likely worsen in 2015 as the economy weakens, unemployment and homelessness increase and the impending election nears. Despite marked political differences between the minority PPP regime and the majority opposition, there is remarkable consensus about the state of the nation: stark inequalities between the rich and the poor permeate the society; the poverty gap continues to increase, a large section of the population remains marginalized, the poor and the working class lack access to comparable resources enjoyed by the rich and powerful; unending blackouts and floods continue unabated, and far too many are denied opportunities to be productive members of society. Many young people are deprived of reliable education, health and other services as well as employment; a number of them are beaten and brutalized by the police and are forced to take the blame for crimes they did not commit and are wrongfully imprisoned. Inevitably, hopelessness and despair have taken hold on the people, especially the youths, who have degenerated into frustration over their inability to lift themselves out of poverty, influence decision-making, and hold the minority PPP regime accountable for their partisan, corrupt and dictatorial actions. A large proportion of socially- and economically-excluded individuals and communities throughout the country are facing multiple deprivations such as jobs, electricity, water, housing and high levels of poverty, all of which are potentially destabilizing. The poor are crying out for their rights to be recognized, as a whole section of society suffers continued discrimination and abuse and there is little or no joy this government brings to them. As a result of the government inaction, some of the institutions that are there to protect our freedoms and our democracy are stuttering, confused as to their roles, and are dazed by the evolving “don’t-care” political culture of the PPP regime. The PPP has not only failed the people but they have turned Guyana into a corrupt, backward and failed state. All Guyana has is a government that keeps reeling from one scandal after another and from one corrupt practice to another.  Desperation, infuriation and frustration are some of the recurring emotions evoked in the citizens as a result of these all-too-frequent scandals and massive corrupt practices. The scandals to which we refer are not the personal dalliances of political figures, such as cheating husbands or wives. We are instead referring to the misuse or misappropriation of public funds; corruption, nepotism; cronyism; the brazen appointment of PPP incompetents in senior management and leadership positions; the packing of state boards with unqualified and inexperienced PPP hacks who will ensure that contracts are awarded to friends and relatives in return for kick-backs; the lack of transparency and accountability in governance; vulgar and abusive behaviour of the former president and ministers; and the bizarre decision by the DPP not to charge the AG for obvious threats to Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall and his staff, to name a few. There is no joy in recounting the scandals—all of them egregious—they have brought the country to the edge of the abyss, staring down into a deep, unfathomable darkness. Government corruption or more specifically, financial gain to the party faithful has a long history in the PPP. The phenomenon has seemingly escalated in recent years under the Jagdeo/Ramotar regime. This was described in a 2005 article by Marsha Gordon who states that “A remarkable difference between the PPP under the Presidency of Cheddi and Janet Jagan of the 90s is that the scandals shifted from maintaining political power to personal financial gains from the use of state funds in 2000 and beyond.” The author suggests that the land deals at Pradoville signaled the beginning of this shift and apparently set the tone of what was to come. She goes on to state that “The scandals have spread from government to quasi-governmental bodies without shame; no accountability only excuses like youthful exuberance…” It was “Power and money, money and power, minute after minute, hour after hour.” The questions the people must ask are: How do we break the cycle of corruption? How do we enforce transparency and accountability? How do we ensure that ministers are held responsible under the law and are held accountable for their betrayal of the public trust? What solutions can be found? We believe that one obvious solution would be for the majority opposition to enforce transparency through Parliament, since this is not going to voluntarily come from the PPP regime. They just cannot throw in the towel by saying that they do not have the power to do more than what they are doing in exposing the wrongs committed by the PPP. We strongly believe that if the opposition has to manufacture that power, then so be it. The media also has to be more proactive in ferreting out similar instances of corruption and mismanagement of public bodies, as Kaieteur News is doing. But the media should not be the only ones applying pressure. The Private Service Commission (PSC), Guyana Bar Association, Labour Unions, Religious Institutions and other civic groups should lead the way to make sure that the tax dollars are being used appropriately. Guyana needs a peaceful revolution to bring about a change in the status quo. Any such revolution must be supported by fact-based information that can lead to constitutional reform. The country cannot afford to continue under the corrupt PPP or the cycle of swapping one party for another without major changes to the constitution, in which no one should be above the law. Jagdeo replaced democracy with one-man rule

- Nagamootoo at AFC’s Canje rally

The rancorous political exchanges continued on Saturday with Alliance for Change (AFC) member, Moses Nagamootoo, accusing President Jagdeo of destroying the democracy fought for by the older members of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and replacing it with “one man rule”. He made the claim on Saturday while addressing Berbicians at a recent meeting  at Adelphi, East Canje, which he said, “historically has been the bed, the cradle of the revolution, the Berbice 1763 Revolution against slavery”. He urged the gathering to make a pledge to “get rid of modern slavery in Guyana”, since he, too has “broken his chains”. “I am the slave to no one and therefore, am capable of making my own decision”, he posited. He stated that the AFC, which is a “rainbow coalition of all races, cultures, and religions,” is the fulfillment of Dr Cheddi Jagan’s wish for a “new, clean, decent alliance to take the country forward”. Nagamootoo, while debunking claims of him wanting Vice- Presidency on the AFC ticket, said that he has never dreamt of being president, but knows that “I am qualified to be president”. “I know I have served my country in all my positions and excelled in those positions, for opening a school that Dr Jagan encouraged me in an area for sugar workers; from Ithaca to Bush Lot, asking people who had children who wanted to go to school”, he said. He touted his life as being one dedicated to community work and to service. He lashed out at Dr. Cheddi ‘Joey’ Jagan for not standing by his father but “who came back and fought his own father, formed two political parties to bring him down, and before the man died, he went and divided the man’s yard, put up a house inside and sold it”. Nagamootoo said he came out of the wounds of struggles and sacrifice to bring freedom to Guyana in 1992. Referring to a PPP campaign ad that has been airing on the television labeling Nagamootoo as ‘Judas’, the politician stated he was having problems with the PPP since before 2006, and that “they were destroying the party from inside”. “Judas betrayed Jesus; Jagdeo betrayed Jagan! Because the things he started to do, Jagan will cry in his grave! And Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Jagdeo betrayed Jagan for thirty, hundred, and a thousand pieces of silver a month that is the $3 M pension a month!” Nagamootoo said. The AFC member said Judas took a “one- for- all payoff, but Jagdeo taking it in increments so that he can enjoy the filthy lucre until he dies!” He stated that Dr Jagan, before he died, named him as his successor at a meeting in Lethem “and some other places in the Rupununi”. “I felt embarrassed when he said that. I went and told the newspaper people ‘do not publish this!’ I respected the unity of the party. I hounded on Comrade Cheddi as to why he did that”, he said. Subsequently after he was summoned to Freedom House and fired by Mrs. Jagan as Minister of Local Government. “They knew I was getting popular. Dr Jagan loved me as he loved a son and I was traveling around the country with him”, he posited. He revealed other matters while he was still with the PPP/C and where he took various strong positions, and became highly popular within the party ranks, mentioning a situation where he nominated Dr Roger Luncheon as the Presidential Candidate and Ralph Ramkarran in 1997 “to be fair to the African population, since Dr Jagan loved Luncheon and trusted him”. He said he thought that we could have an alliance with African and Indians and “we would have united the country then using Dr Jagan’s death to bring in sympathy for us”. He said some members within the party then told him that they were not ready for an African president and it was then he realized that it was not Dr Jagan’s party anymore. He reminisced that a search then began to find a suitable person to replace the dead Dr Jagan, in what he called “somebody who come from Moscow, who is a Communist”. “And this man doesn’t have a wife! He doesn’t have a family! He voted himself, free plane tickets, for he and his ‘family’! He urged the people to embrace the policies of the AFC come November 28 and not to allow the 28 years of PNC rule to come back to Guyana. That said, he urged disenfranchised supports of the PPP and PNC to come on board with the AFC. Embracing a national government is one of the strong ideals of the AFC, thus strengthening the democratic process. He said, that unlike other candidates, AFC’s Presidential Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan is fit and ready to lead Guyana into the future. He said there is no comparison among the leaders. “And for the reason that Ramotar sat there and allowed the destruction of democracy of the party; he ought to be voted out of this country!” he posited. He accused the party of “helping themselves into the Wildlife Fund”. “I told them to investigate these people. They didn’t do it! Jagdeo was so incompetent and inefficient; he couldn’t handle the crime situation. He had to bring in other people!” Nagamootoo said he asked the PPP to cooperate with the opposition but “Jagdeo threw away” the idea.

What is new, Asquith Rose and Harish Singh?

What is new is the PPP getting a licking on the PR front as the people with empty bellies rebel against them.  The East Indian ladies that walk in the mud at Parika are rebelling against them.

Nagamootoo is advancing in age, his high blood pressure and diabetes is getting the better of him. Its time is gracefully bow out of politics and spend his remaining time with his grand kids.

Nagamootoo from all accounts is a "dead meat" candidate.

Nagamotoo is a rotten fish candidate.

He was making his pitch by cussing down and selling spoil fish at Skeldon Market.

Barbicans gave this mental case the cold shoulder.

To talk about twilight, better watch your candidate, he look like a living dead today when he announced the elections.
