The battle lines have been drawn and the National Gymnasium is expected to be transformed into a war zone when the Andrew Lewis National Novices tournament punches off this evening.
The three-day Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) event has attracted the best Novice fighters in the country and explosive action is anticipated from first bell tonight at 7:00pm. GBA president Steve Ninvalle had earlier stated that this year’s activity would not be a walk in the park for reigning champion gym, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). Ninvalle had simply said, “It is no secret that the Republican Gym has been hard at training. They have given the Army its toughest challenge in recent times and just three years ago was able to take the coveted Champion Gym title. It is quite clear that from the amount of work put in, they are looking to emulate the 2014 feat.” Whether his prediction comes true or the GDF are able halt the Republican ‘army’ in their tracks will be known over the next few nights at the Gymnasium. Clashes between the two top gyms have always brought out the best in action inside and outside of the ring. Within the ropes fighters from Republican and GDF have intense rivalry, while on the outside supporters of the two gyms frequently engage in battles to see who is loudest at beating drums. With the service of veteran AIBA Three Star Coach Terrence Poole the GDF are a very formidable foe, Adrian Thomas, Coach of the Republicans, has done very well, being very capable in the coaching role and very hungry for success. He has been able to whip his charges into top shape and they will come a hungry lot which spells trouble for all comers. Over 75 boxers representing 10 gyms will participate in the tournament which has been named after Guyana’s first world champion. Action commences at 7:00pm nightly and the tournament concludes on Thursday evening. The GBA has partnered with The National Sport Commission, Courts, Guyana Olympic Association, Trustee’s Pawn Shop and Delmur Shipping in order to make the tournament a reality.
