In 48 hours the National Gymnasium is expected to be transformed into a war zone when the Andrew Lewis National Novices tournament punches off on Tuesday evening.
The three-day event has attracted the best Novice fighters in the country and GBA president Steve Ninvalle is confident that this year’s activity would not be a walk in the park for reigning champion Guyana Defence Force. “It is no secret that the Republican Gym has been hard at training. They have given the Army its toughest challenge in recent times and just three years ago was able to take the coveted Champion Gym title. It is quite clear that from the amount of work put in that they are looking to emulate the 2014 feat,” Ninvalle said. Clashes between the two top gyms have always brought out the best in action inside and outside of the ring. Within the ropes fighters from Republican and GDF have intense rivalry, while on the outside supporters of the two gyms frequently engage in battles to see who is loudest at beating drums. According to Ninvalle, the army has on its side the service of veteran coach Terrence Poole, Guyana’s first to be certified AIBA Three Star. However, the GBA boss added that Adrian Thomas, coach of the Republicans, is capable and hungry for success. “This has been passed on to his charges so what has become the norm is for the gym to turn out victory-seeking, battle- ready boxers,” Ninvalle disclosed. Over 75 boxers representing 10 gyms will participate in the tournament which has been named after Guyana’s first world champion. Action commences at 7 pm on Tuesday and concludes on Thursday evening. The GBA has partnered with The National Sport Commission, Courts, Guyana Olympic Association, Trustee’s Pawn Shop and Delmur Shipping in order to make the tournament a reality.
