November will be a brutal month as the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is gearing up to have two meets with much anticipated slugging. The first meet is the National Under-16 boxing championships which will punch off on next Saturday, November 18th at the Andrew βSix Headβ Lewis boxing gym in Albouystown. The under-16 event will see one day of glove action with over 38 boxers set to throw down among 10 gyms from 13:30hrs, while the weigh-in will be at 09:00hrs. Closing off the GBAβs month of activities will be the National Open Boxing Championships which is set for a grand amateur throw-down at the National Gymnasium from November 27th to 30th. The medical and weigh-in for the competition will be on the 27th and the following three nights will see 10 bouts each among over 40 pugilists from over 10 gyms. Top fighters who will be looking to reassert their dominance in the amateur arena include Jason Barker (Heavyweight Champion) of Republican Boxing Gym, Dennis Thomas (Middleweight champion) of Police Boxing Gym, Colin βSupermanβ Lewis (Junior Welterweight champion) of GDF, Clairmont βVibemanβ Gibson (Bantamweight champion) of GDF, Markember βViolenceβ Pierre (Light Heavyweight champion) of GDF. In the meat of the action will be Caribbean Middleweight champion, Desmond Amsterdam of GDF gym and along with the National and Caribbean Lightweight champion, Joel Williamson of Rose Hall Jammers boxing gym in Berbice. Defending champions, the Guyana Defence Force Gym has won this competition for the past 15 years.
