Cops ‘high-fiving’ after tasering Florida teen to death: Eyewitnesses
Israel Hernandez-Llach died on Tuesday shortly after being tasered by police officers in Miami Beach, Florida.
Colombian-born Israel Hernandez-Llach died on Tuesday shortly after being chased down and tasered by police officers, who had caught him spray-painting the wall of a vacant restaurant that was already covered in street art.
We Are Change, an independent media organization, headed to Miami Beach where the teenager was killed, and conducted exclusive interviews with eyewitnesses and people who described themselves as Hernandez-Llach’s best friends.
“I hear the officers on the radio, ‘We got the Hispanic male in custody’ and I go to the scene where they had him by the bank, and he was just there lying motionless and cops surrounding him clapping, congratulating and laughing,” said an unidentified male eyewitness.
When asked again whether the officers were in celebratory mood after tasering the teenage boy, the young man confirmed that, “yes they were high-fiving and laughing.”
“They were high-fiving each other and they were acting like it was nothing. I actually heard one of the cops saying ‘you should have seen how he stiffened up when we tased him,’” said another eyewitness who said he was a friend of Hernandez-Llach’s.
Hernandez-Llach’s death has sent shockwaves across the Miami Beach community. Hundreds of demonstrators in Florida held a tearful rally on Saturday for the slain teenager.
The teen’s family is demanding a full investigation into their son’s death. Israel Hernandez-Bandera, the teen's father, has called his son's death "an act of barbarism" and an "assassination of a young artist and photographer."
