The National Communications Network has deemed the recent move by the joint parliamentary opposition to remove the subvention of $81M as vindictive, insensitive, in bad faith and anti-national.
NCN says the argument that the cut is occasioned by the lack of special treatment for opposition political parties with regard to air time is specious.
The National Communications Network says for lawmakers to act in this despicable fashion does not bode well.
This is even more worrying as it goes against the caution expressed by Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman on the judicious use of the oppositionβs one-seat majority.
As a media outlet, NCN notes that it has exhibited a strong sense of responsibility to the public, by promoting and being involved in all aspects of national development.
It has provided its services, many of them free of cost, to religious, social, economic, cultural, sports, environmental, business, differently-abled and community-based organizations.
Without these services, these organizations and their constituencies would not be able to be part of the national landscape.
NCN adds that its contributions to the nation in situations of national and local emergencies,
Providing information on national and international developments, supporting local producers of goods and services, youths, women, and small entrepreneurs are unsurpassed.
This, management says is being done selflessly in a very competitive environment.
It is for this reason, NCN has requested Governmentβs help on a yearly basis to bolster efforts at national development, and for the same reason, the oppositionβs actions are even more irrational.
NCN has reiterated that it is cognizant of its position as a state-owned media, adding that it does not craft, but dutifully executes policies.
It is for the opposition and the government to define and subsequently issue guidelines on special dispensation with regard to air time for political organizations, including the ruling PPP/C.
NCN is calling on all Guyanese, including media houses and media organizations to appeal for reason to prevail and for this national asset be given the necessary resources to do its important work.
NCNβs allocation was reduced by one dollar for the second consecutive year by the combined opposition.
