It's called Bulbul Tarang or Indian Banjo. I think you are right about the white box. It seems similar to the ones that are used by Guitarist for special effects re echo or overdrive. I think this instrument originated in Japan and Indians modified it to get the 1/16th notes; those keys can slide left or right to bend the notes.
This is cool musical instrument.
