High school sex video stuns Education Ministry

October 7, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Two home-made videos purportedly showing students of a top secondary school engaging in sexual activity, has sparked condemnation from sections of society. The videos, after complaints to social site, FaceBook, keep being taken down but as soon one video clip is removed another is put up. The students appeared to be wearing the uniform of St. Rose’s High School. One video is only 15 seconds long. It shows a teen sitting in the corner on the floor, up against the wall, receiving what appears to be oral sex, from a schoolmate. The girl has her shoes off and is backing the camera while the boy is smiling. The camera shifts around and focuses on another boy and girl kissing. The second girl is facing the camera; her shirt is unbuttoned revealing a white sports bra. It appears that another female was the one holding the camera. The other video was even more graphic showing details of one of the girl performing oral sex. One of the girls was heard cursing, asking what happened to her song. The young teens are smiling and are aware that their sexual acts are being recorded. Kaieteur News was told that the videos were made in the home of one of the girls. Contacted yesterday, Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, said that her ministry became aware of the video on Thursday, October 2. However, it was only brought to her attention last night. “We are going to do what is in the best interest of the children immediately involved. I am informed and being advised from professionals in the ministry. We are still investigating. We don’t have all the details yet. The details will help guide us.” The official said that incident is indeed unfortunate. According to the Minister, Guyana is in a world where the people are exposed to the many advances in technology. The nation has to come to grips with the effects that it has with citizens needing to be more responsible with what their children are being exposed to and viewing. Minister Manickchand also said that the students involved are yet to be identified.  However, the school authorities know who they are. The children and their parents were summoned before they were ordered to report to the Welfare Department of the Education Ministry today.

Students’ sex video circulates in President’s College

- Fifth formers suspended

The administrators of President’s College have suspended two Fifth Form students following the circulation of a video of them having sex in the school’s Home Economics Department. The shocking video was brought to the administrators of the school by fellow students who managed to obtain it clandestinely by downloading it from the laptop of the male student involved. Kaieteur News understands that the video was circulated to several students of the school and even to residents of the village of Golden Grove on the East Coast of Demerara, where Guyana’s only live-in secondary institution is located. According to sources in the school, from all appearances the female involved in the episode had given consent for the video to be made. This newspaper managed to see some footage of the five-minute video in which the parties are observed engaging in oral and penetrative sex. It also has a production name, ‘(Nicky) does the dirtiest thing’. The students involved, one of whom hails from Berbice and the other from Tuschen, West Coast Demerara, were suspended for one week. A Ministry of Education official confirmed that the matter was being dealt with, but stated that more drastic action was not contemplated because of the upcoming CSEC examinations which will be written in a few months’ time. But the move is not going down well with other students and staff who are of the view that the video has scandalized the high profile boarding secondary institution. “These students should not be allowed to be in the dorms…and what about the teacher responsible for the area that this act took place?  These children had the keys to the department,” a source at the school told this newspaper. According to the source, this is not the first time that students of the school have been caught having sex with each other on the premises. On one occasion, a female student left the school for good after she was scolded for engaging in the act in one of the dorms. Sex in schools is reportedly becoming a major headache for education officials across the country. Then there is the fact that it not only involves students, but teachers as well. A few weeks ago, a teacher was charged after he allegedly recorded himself having sex with one of his female students.

I am sure this type of sexual activity has been going on for a while and more frequently than we would like to believe. Technology has exposed it now. Hope none of these kids try to commit suicide.

Mitwah, you will find these kind of activities more often among school boys and girls today than yesteryear. Guyanese are not limited to information and exposure via social media, and by nature, school children are being sexually curious. The Minister of Education is aware of the situation and she already call for remedial action. The Ministry cannot monitor each student 24/7, but this is the challenge we all must face from time to time.
