UG Road, Turkeyen, between the campus’ Cummings Lodge entrance and Denis Street, Sophia, has recently reopened to vehicular traffic after eight months of rehabilitation works.

A section of the Road is already deteriorating, and residents are fearing the road may soon close again. The $275,506,000 project is at a reduced cost, as in 2021 the Ali regime announced it was using “technological solutions to reduce the cost attached to the rehabilitation” according to the administration’s Department of Public Information (DPI).

According to DPI, “Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill said geotextile fabric will be used to enhance the roadwork. He said the technology is needed to protect the road’s structure, which has undergone numerous repairs.” Edghill was at the time inspecting the project.

Months of repairs seem to have fallen short as a section of the Road is developing into a huge crater. The contractor has been identified Yunas Civil and Building Construction Services. In 2019 the company was one of several debarred from participating in the procurement process by the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), according to information published by the Public Procurement Commission.
