New gov’t moves to restore dignity to national institutions
Just 24-hours after being sworn in as President, Head-of-State Brigadier David Granger was on Sunday overseeing the restoration of the Independence Monument on Brickdam, Georgetown, as part of a broader plan by the new government to restore pride in national institutions.
Speaking to NewsNow while inspecting the work being carried out, Granger said the Independence Monument which was erected in commemoration of the country gaining independence in 1966 has not been properly maintained over the years. “This is one of the most important monuments. It commemorates our independence in 1966 and we felt that…the maintenance has been allowed to lapse and it has become something of a disgrace. I don’t think in the western hemisphere anybody would’ve allowed their Independence Monument to look the way we had it looking,” he said.
The President indicated that this was the first step in “restoring dignity to our national institutions” and assured that the APNU+AFC was committed to preserving all the country’s national monuments and institutions.
