Guyanese all around the country are now able to receive medical care at the premier institution, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), in an environment that is much improved as a result of the operationalisation of the new $1.6B in-patient facility.

The new wing of the hospital which began operations last month, is slated to be officially commissioned on Monday, November 21.

The new wing offers significant relief to both patients and staff in the receipt and delivery of services which were being done in cramped conditions, and is an indication of the support given by the Administration towards continuously enhancing the health sector.

Thus far, 214 beds are already in the new wing where patients from all the various out-patient wards occupy rooms with 4 to 6 beds. Additionally, each bed is equipped with modern centralized monitoring devices including gas masks and heart and blood pressure monitors.

In an effort to ensure the facility is adequately manned 65 doctors and 60 nurses were identified to deliver care. The existence of the new in-patient facility is expected to ease the overcrowding that previously existed.

With the relocation of patients to the new wing, GPHC has adjusted its rules and visitation hours for patients’ family and friends. Relatives would not be permitted to take any eatables into the ward, and there is a strict two-relative per patient (at any one time) rule and children below 12 years old will not be permitted on the wards.

Additionally, the institution has also adjusted its visiting hours for all open wards which also includes those in the new wing; these are from Mondays to Fridays, 06:00h to 06:30h, 12:00h to 12:30h and 16:00h to 17:00h (4 to 5pm) and on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays visitation is allowed from 11:00h to 17:00h.

In the 2010 national budget, $716M was allocated to commence the first phase of the new inpatient facility at GPHC, while in 2011 an additional $235M was budgeted for its completion.

The challenges of providing services to residents across the country are many and over the years many hurdles have been crossed. While there is still a long way to go, Guyana can boast of many new developments in areas which were never traversed in the past.

Indications of the government’s continued commitment to provide the best health care can be identified in the construction of hospitals, health centers, huts and posts throughout the country and provisions for the design of a 150 bed surgical specialty hospital which will conduct specialist surgical procedures including invasive cardiology and radiation oncology.
