New Permanent Representative of Guyana Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, George Wilfred Talbot, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Talbot was ChargΓ© dβaffaires ai at the Permanent Mission of Guyana in New York, where he also held the rank of Minister Counsellor, having previously been Second Secretary and First Secretary.
Mr. Talbot has held a variety of posts related to multilateral diplomacy, working on economic, social and political issues. He headed the delegation in New York when Guyana held the Chair of the Union of South American Nations in 2011, and the Rio Group in 2006. He was also a member of the delegation when the country chaired the Group of 77 and China, in 1999.
His work with several intergovernmental bodies within the United Nations system includes holding the positions of Vice-President of the High-level Committee on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries; Vice-Chairman of the United Nations Forum on Forests; Vice-Chairman of the Commission on Sustainable Development; and Vice-President of the United Nations Development Programme/United Nations Population Fund Executive Board. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993.
Mr. Talbot holds a masterβs degree in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a Bachelorβs degree in modern languages from the University of Guyana. He speaks English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
He is married and has one son.
