Mortgage charges brought by authorities in New York against US cricket captain and former Guyanese player Steve Massiah were dropped last week Monday following a motion by the prosecutor before Judge Joan M. Azrack.

Massiah had been in plea deal discussions with prosecutors  and the dropping of the charges suggests that some arrangement has been arrived at. Court documents seen by this newspaper only stated that the US authorities filed a motion to dismiss the complaint without prejudice and the judge sitting in the United States District Court

He no doubt cut a deal.  Good for him though.  In all likelihood he was just a pawn in Ed's scheme, and probably didn't even know about the fraudulent transactions.  In that case the Feds would have a hard time proving intent.

can't wait to read about the plea deal Ed Ahmad made and how many will be going down in such a deal.

Can Nehru, Dem_Guy or Albert from Monkey Mountain .......

remind us about how the US Govt is linking the four things listed below

to a US $50 Million Mortgage scam in Queens.

(1) the secret shipment of some 40 Foot containers filled with Building Materials that was shipped to Jagbeo at State House n Guyana.

(2)A secret Deal involving PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar which saw the transfer of Ownership of PPP Property  at Industrial Site.

(3) A next Deal involving Guysuco Director Donald Ramotar which saw the Transfer of Ownership of the Entire Lenora Estate Compound which was owned by Guysuco.

(4) US Govt agents removing a friend of Jagdeo & Ramotar as he was Boarding a Plane at JFK and heading to Guyana to meet Jagdeo & Ramotar.

US cricket captain arrested for mortgage fraud scam

US cricket captain arrested for mortgage fraud scam New York: US Cricket Team captain Steve Massiah has been arrested in connection with a Queens-based mortgage scam allegedly run by Edul Ahmad, a broker whose 40,000 dollars donation to Republican Gregory Meeks is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

US officials have confiscated Massiah’s passport and restricted his travel after arresting him on November 22 on charges of allegedly defrauding banks and mortgage companies by falsifying mortgage loan applications.

Massiah, 32, an Ahmad employee, became captain of the US Cricket Team. His passport was confiscated, and he seems certain to miss an important March qualifying tournament in Dubai.

“I’m concerned,” said one team official.

Massiah, who did not respond to requests for comment, has entered into plea negotiations with the US Attorney’s Office, court records show.

Also charged were Qayaam Farrouq, 42, who plays in a New York cricket league, and Mohamed Gurmohamed, 58. Both were real-estate salesmen in Ahmad’s office.

Ahmad was arrested in July, and he’s also discussing a plea deal with the FBI.

Authorities are interested in what he might tell about the 40,000 dollars he gave Meeks in 2007, which the congressman didn’t disclose until the FBI questioned Ahmad about it. The House Ethics Committee is currently probing whether it was an illegal gift.
In Massiah’s case, he applied for a 292,500 dollars loan from Countrywide in 2007 to a buy a home in Jamaica, falsely saying he earned 6,650 dollars a month as a manager at Ahmad’s catering company, court papers show.

He said he intended to live in the Jamaica home, when in reality he was buying the property with Ahmad.

(NEW YORK POST).-A Queens real estate broker who loaned money to Rep. Gregory Meeks today was denied permission to travel to South America - one week after his arrest on mortgage fraud charges.

Edul Ahmad, who loaned Meeks $40,000 in 2007, had sought to visit his native Guyana to transact an important real estate deal there.

The businessman - who currently faces charges in New York that he used straw buyers to defraud a bank of hundreds of thousands of dollars - has political friends in high places in Guyana, too, his attorney told Brooklyn federal Magistrate Judge Steven Gold.

EDUL AHMAD

"He's personal friends with the current president and the past president," said Ahmad's attorney Steven Kartagener.

Indeed, Ahmad is a frequent visitor to Guyana and is known in the country as a friend of President Bharrat Jagdeo, who has been in office since 1999, sources told The Post.

The relationship appears to transcend friendship to involve business interests.

In 2009, the Ahmad Group sent 29 tons of building supplies - including roof tiles and kitchen sinks - to Jagdeo at the state house in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city, according to shipping records.

Ahmad's "close ties" with Guyana were among the objections raised today by Assistant US Attorney Alexander Solomon in opposing the businessman's request during a hearing in Brooklyn federal court.

Despite posting a $2.5 million bond, Ahmad - if granted permission to travel out of the country - could choose to remain in Guyana to avoid a New York fraud trial, Solomon told Gold.

The judge agreed, and denied the 43-year-old businessman's request to travel - citing the fact that Guyana has no extradition treaty with the US.

Allegations of predatory lending, forged documentation, falsified mortgage information and missing records have dogged Ahmad for years, The Post reported last week.

State officials have investigated the real estate broker five times since 2006, referring two of those probes to the Queens District Attorney's Office for review, according to state Department of State records.

Another probe by the state Banking Department and Department of State in 2007 turned up home buyers who said they were given mortgages for more than they could afford and allegations that their names were forged on documents.

Last week, Ahmad was arrested by FBI agents on mortgage fraud charges for allegedly bilking a lender, Countrywide Home Loans, in connection with the purchase of properties in Queens in 2007.

Ahmad immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Baruch College in 1988. He started his company, the Ahmad Group, in 1993, according to the company’s web site.

Among his diverse business interests are Century 21 Ahmad Realty, a mortgage brokerage and the Chateau Royale catering hall in Richmond Hill.

At least one of the alleged straw purchasers in the federal mortgage fraud case was identified as an employee of Ahmad realty firm, according to papers filed by Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

Ahmad plans to fight the feds' charges.

Kartagener declined to comment after today's hearing.

Meeks, who is under federal probe for his role in a Queens charity, repaid Ahmad's personal loan with 12.5 percent interest -- after the FBI questioned Ahmad about it.

Maybe a deal was made for him to give evidence or maybe the state recognized that he was just a straw participant.

There was an article in a New York paper that said "a big fish" had recruited cricketers to participate in his mortgage fraud.

If Ed plays his cards right then he can beat this case like Massiah.  In the end the state may most likely want the political connections of Ed instead of Ed. That is where the power lies.  If Ed decides to rat out his political connections then most likely he may not go to jail.  The state may not care about Ed and his catering company etc if they can get their hands on the power behind Ed.

If you look at the arguments during Ed's bail hearing.  The state was arguing that he should not get bail because of his connections.  That may be an indication of how they see the case.
