I agree! Same thing I've said for years on the issue of showing these gang related shootings in T.O on the front pages, to those inclined to carry these actions the news seems to glorify these killings.

If they shoot and get away with it, then there will be "copy cats", but T O is not Guyana the T O police get their men. Suicide is MENTAL illness, Guyana needs experts in that field to be placed in all regions, the same as having district Doctors, you see a Doctor for a cold, you should be able to see a expert for mental problems. If lives MATTER , then the government MUST invest in personnel to treat such problem.

To what degree would you say suicides are tied to cultural and religious norms in Guyana?

FM

Gilly...it is a fact. President Granger was right. There is indeed a phenomenon of copy cat or clustering of suicide. There are studies of this in the academic literature. My coauthor and I have started looking into it. There is of course a very strong economic dimension to suicide. Data...data...no one was keeping good data. And when you're overseas and ask for the data they say we know too much. We're trying to reconstruct the dataset.

Agreed Riff. If it wasn't for Burnham, many of us in Guyana might have committed suicide. I always thanked Burnham for me coming to America.

I am not weak like you to think of suicide because of politicians

Riff, let me make this clear to you. I have never thought of harming myself and never will. I always believe our problems are temporary and we can overcome it. There is nothing in this world that will cause me to commit suicide. Maybe if I lived in Guyana I might have a different frame of mind.

You are contradicting yourself by claiming that nothing will make you committ suicide, then going to say that if you lived in Guyana you might feel different...

No politician is worth committing suicide over!!!

President Granger recently expressed concern about copycat suicides due to press publicity. I had scratched my head but after reading the article in the link, I think the President has a point. I could not post the text of the article here because it has copyright restriction. This is my last thread on suicides in Guyana.

Gil,

You are on to something interesting here. We need some UN experts in Guyana to look into this problem and epidemic.

My PPP failed very badly in this area, I hope that the current administration tackle this epidemic.

Gil, The word "IF" is used. It's a condition. I do not live in Guyana so I don't have to worry about it. I continue to live a happy and stress free family life here. Remember, I was in NA when some of these dudes were still hanging their batties shitting from the plank  bridge and waiting for someone to bring water to wash their BT. Don't worry about the shit trench water..we sold the shit trench fish to you town side people. You guys seem to enjoy them..you continue buying the shit trench fish.

Vishnu Bisram gives us a surprising take in today's Kaieteur News: "The PPP did not even want to recognize there was a suicide problem plaguing the nation and more specifically very high among its own supporters. But that was the nature of PPP governance – neglect of its base (feeling confident they will not abandon ship) that ultimately saw many supporters leaving the party and it being removed from office over arrogant rule perhaps never to return to office again. The behavior of some in the then governing PPP was appalling. The party leadership had/has some chaps more interested in their own lives (personal enrichment and social entertainment) with very little concern for others."

Prepare yourself for a good cuss down, Mr Bisram.

R u crazy. Who would want to commit suicide just because others are doing it. That is very different from gang related crimes.

Is nah the same thing as racism against indos, when putagees tek the sides of Afros. Hating another is much more easier than gang related crimes and killing one self.

The damage cause by this attitude is still being experienced by the people. Thus the high suicide level continue among Indians.

[Ramkarran take on] Mustapha and Jaferally attitude [with Jagdeo] contributed to this situation.

The people are broken by this attitude and need to be reinforced with a positive outlook, for any lifestyle change to take place.

I can also see a good cuss-down. PPP Bisram turned traitor, when the truth is told.

Tola Bhai, can you tell us in what region(s) you are trying this suicide prevention program? Do you know if your efforts are producing any results? Have you had any personal intervention to prevent a single suicide? Please don't take this as if I am making a mockery of your efforts. If you saved one life, your efforts should be commended.

TK, if more people are brave enough confront Jagdeo, the PPP has a good chance of restoring itself.

Most of GNI's contributors live in North America. Do you expect us to jump on a flight today to attend a rally tomorrow morning in Guyana?
