No accommodation for Opposition at flag-raising ceremony

What was expected to be an exciting time for members of the parliamentary Opposition People’s Progressive

Disappointed PPP members leaving D'Urban Park on Wednesday evening

Disappointed PPP members leaving D’Urban Park on Wednesday evening

Party/Civic (PPP/C), turned out to be very insulting and unpleasant event, as there were no seating arrangements for them when they turned up at D’Urban Park to witness the flag raising ceremony.

The situation forced Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to gather his MP’s and leave the celebration, in protest of what he said seemed to be an attempt to embarrass the PPP.

When contacted on Wednesday evening, Jagdeo told Guyana Times that his Party had signalled its intention of attending the event, since it wanted to participate in the activities to mark the country’s significant milestone.

He said contact was also made with Junior Education Minister Nicolette Henry, who holds responsibility for the event, concerning the seating arrangement. He said assurance was given that this was taken care of. In fact, he said she related that there were some 1000 VIP seats.

Jagdeo further related that the Party received a ruthless shock when members turned up, but had to stand for over 30 minutes. Jagdeo said, while himself and a few other senior members of the Party were already seated, the majority of party members were left standing, while other persons, many of whom were dressed inappropriately, passed by and were allowed seats. He said he asked Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams to address the matter and warned that if it was not, then he would be left with no choice but to leave in solidarity with his colleagues who were left unseated.

The former President said nothing was done, and his Party left some 45 minutes after arriving.

DG, I am not at all surprise. Those people are INHUMAN, DESTRUCTIVE, BULLIES, HOOLIGANS, they have always been like that. That is exactly what they teach at Sophia University.  Many on this Board were "Heducated" there!!!!!!!!!

Ray, they talk about Unity, the very way they talked about CHANGe.. REmember the slogans just before May 11 , 2015, everything had the word change. But they forgot to say change for the worst.

What was expected to be a unified front for this special occasion turned out to be an embarrassment created by the PNC minister and government.

Given that the PPP was refusing to be involved in this event until recently, why the shock that people didn't expect them to show up in numbers?

This is what happens when folks play hard to get?

The PPP should be aggressively transforming itself from being the "coolie people party interested only in consolidating the East Indian support base".

If they play that silly "blackman must apologize because we innocent, they will be ignored".  The onus is as much on the PPP as it is on the coalition to do outreach.

When Granger assumed duties he tried to outreach, and was rebuffed by the PPP.

Your total response, as usual, is irrelevant to the focused item.

Of note .. It was apt for the government to show its attempt, for the first time on this occasion, to bring together the two major political groups for the public-at-large to see a step in the right direction.

The first thing that they attempted to so was exactly that when they assumed office.

The PPP screamed that they weren't going to have any contact with them.

Now you wonder why APNU felt that PPP folks wouldn't show up, so only assigned seats for the top level officials, as protocol would dictate.

One hand cannot clap, so if the PPP doesn't raise their hands, then there will be no claps.  Sorry this "blackman must apologize" strategy of the PPP has gotten very boring.

This was not the time to play that game of tit for tat

No tit for tat here.  If the PPP says that they aren't interested in dialogue, then others move on.  Who wants to run behind folks who continually reject you.

You are not even a paid or unpaid Advisor for the coalition, yet you find time to defend injustice, the government were told of the PPP attendance and an approximate number was given. That is PNC UNITY, divide and rule, rule along racial lines, rule by Party lines, Change my ASS.

I am not paid, which shows that I say what I consider to be right.

The PPP are the last people to whine about this, when up to last week they were still wailing that the event was a waste of money, and that they weren't interested in participating.

And the PPP, which had almost no blacks in top decision making positions, which describes itself as the "coolie people party".  Which boasted that they "consolidated the East Indian support base", are the ones who outreach for unity?  And this after bottom house campaign last year that a PPP loss would mean that blacks would rape and kill East Indians and Amerindians.

Really not a good showing.

The notion of the PPP accusing any one of being exclusionary, or demanding that they ought to be treated the way that they didn't treat others, is a joke.

Yes, when Roger Luncheon, when asked why very few blacks headed gov't commissions, and corporations, and virtually none were appointed heads of overseas missions, said that "blacks aren't qualified".

Hmmm.  This is how the PPP signals their interest in unity.  A dose of their own medicine is what they deserve.

1. There was no attempt by the PNC for reconciliation when they became the government.

2. David Granger publicly acknowledge, after the issues were pressed for them to respond, that they did not seek reconciliation.

3. David Granger was clearly stated in the news media that he assumed that reconciliation was sought by his group.

You can invent your lies as you wish. Granger did invite the PPP for dialogue, and the PPP screamed back that the election was rigged, and they will not dialogue.

When the PPP won only 49% of the votes in 2011, did they want dialogue?  No.  They shut down parliament by refusing to consider proposals from the opposition, and screamed that they had the mandate, even though 51% of the voters rejected them.

The notion that the PPP criticizes any for exclusion is a joke. They even excluded the Civic, reducing them to being rubber stamps.
