The Commissioners probing the July 18 deaths of three protesters at Linden on Wednesday stated that there has been no evidence produced to date which implicates Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee. This was the conclusion from Commission Chairman Justice Lensley Wolfe following an enquiry from attorney for the APNU Basil Williams on the minister’s possible appearance. “Nothing has been said so far which implicates him,” Wolfe stated. Attorney for the victims’ families Nigel Hughes had also enquired whether a letter had been sent to the minister requesting his presence before the Commission. To this the retired justice responded that the matter remained open. Hughes had earlier alleged that Rohee was in contact with the commander on the ground, Clifton Hicken, just before the shooting of the protesters and a discussion on the use of lethal force had taken place. But phone records presented to the Commission showed that contact between the two men, which had been denied by Hicken, occurred after the victims were shot. The opposition parties have also contended that Rohee should bear ministerial responsibility for the deaths of the three men whom it is alleged died at the hands of the police during attempts to clear protesters from a key bridge. The hearings are currently in the third week. |
