No GYD$50,000 bonus for sugar workers- Finance Minister

No GYD$50,000 bonus for sugar workers- Finance Minister

Finance Minister Winston Jordan says that the government will not be able to pay sugar workers a GYD$50,000 bonus as requested by the Guyana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU).

GAWU in a release Thursday had stated that the Finance Minister had been written requesting that the same bonus given to public servants be given to sugar workers.

“Bearing in mind that the pittance API award is to be paid until March next year, GAWU wrote to the Minister of Finance on (Tuesday) December 15, 2015 who announced the award, requesting that the $50,000 Christmas Bonus award to Public Sector employees be awarded also to the sugar workers who are employees also of a state-owned enterprise.”

Jordan in an invited comment however told Demerara Waves that GAWU’s request cannot be facilitated. The Finance Minister said that the Union “could ask” but as far as government, complying that is unknown.

“The money that we have paid to the public servants is more or less all that we had and we thought that they needed to benefit,” said Jordan.

“We don’t have any more money – not that this stage,” Jordan added.

GAWU said that sugar workers began protesting on December 16 and there are plans to continue protest actions into the New Year.

“They feel justifiably that they have been singled out for discrimination notwithstanding the acknowledgement of their hard and dedicated work which has led to the industry breaking new records including the surpassing of the Corporation’s production target for the first time in eleven (11) years,” GAWU stated.

Since this is not coming from Guyana Times and from Denis, I would comment as he has a lot more credibility. What you see here goes back to the 50% increase for Ministers. You see they have to now reward their masses with something to save some face. The sugar workers are the PPP's masses. So far my model is making spot on predictions. And the main prediction it makes is they are doing nothing that will cause the country to escape the underdevelopment equilibrium trap...the dankey cart economy trap.

this has very little to do with the minista "50%

public service getting any bonus under ANY circumstances would have triggered a call of 'equivalence' by GAWU for the "PPP masses" no matter the economic condition of GUYSUCO

and, what does this low ethnic politicking have to do with economic modeling and "underdevelopment equilibrium trap"?

it's simply race baiting by the PPP, and Jordan's response to the question was poor

Yet this is the same Jordan who is getting ready to blow away millions on upcoming Mashramani and Independence celebrations.  And for Nagamootoo to run off to Argentina to attend inauguration celebration among other useless things.

It has a lot to do with the 50%. They have not yet recovered. They had to reward their ethnic masses. The problem is the sugar workers just made a production target...so the MOF's statements read even worse. A verifiable production target. They are also playing the race-baiting thing...but they're much more sophisticated. So, I can see the tit-for-tat trends if you can't. It is not a one shot game...it is repeated and dynamic. If they had a vision of social cohesion none of this would have been happening. They never did...it was all talks.

the "tit-for-tat" is obvious, and it is racial!

do you really believe, given the recent production target being met, etc., that GAWU's posture would be different absent the minista increase?

GAWU's posture will be same regardless. The problem is imagery...GAWU/PPP now have something to take back to a mass of people who don't follow the events in total. Public servants just got a salary increase...now they get a one time bonus. Think about the image...and its implication for social cohesion which we now know was just lip service.

The bonus is for public sector workers. Since the majority of these workers would have been given employment under PPP, what is your justification for making the claim that the government had to reward their ethnic masses? Are you trying to imply that the PPP only gave the low paid jobs to non-East Indians, and kept all the highly paid jobs just for the East Indians?

Don't you think that Guiysuco already gets too much from the gov't?  If Guysuco cannot pay the workers then the same idiots who voted for the PPP, which destroyed Guysuco should be demanding to know why the PPP allowed Guysuco to fall into such a sorry state.

But folks like you will want us to forget that on the day after the election Guysuco announced that they didn't have the cash to meet payroll, which was due 2 weeks after that.

And BTW GAWU boasted that the average cane cutter makes GY$1 million annually.  This being way in excess of the GY$600,000 and less for those who will get the bous.  Based on this fact the cane cutters wouldn't qualify as they earn too much.

Given the fact that Venezuela is a likely ally of Venezuela, in its calim against Guyana, given its tirade about some foggy islands with more sheep than (BRITISH) people, you would think that attempting to woo them would be a good move on Guyana's part.

But you prefer Venezuela to invade Guyana, because that will mean the end of "blackman gov't".  Interestingly enough when the PPP was in power, we NEVER heard blacks so eager for a Venezuela invasion.  Why is that?
