No time for laughing in Guyana

Dear Editor,

Of all the preposterous things I’ve heard, few can beat the statement made yesterday in the National Assembly by Minister Robeson Benn, that

“The Demerara Harbour Bridge is in its best state” now. Except perhaps the statement by Ms Gail Teixeira that the Speaker do the “decent“ thing, and not allow debate on a motion that was duly moved and seconded by the Opposition side of the House, because she believed that it was going to be a no-confidence motion in a minister of the government.

Then there was the recent announcement by the President that there will now be a “technical team to examine all options available for the implementation of the electricity tariff increase in Linden.”

And last, but certainly not least, there was the statement by Prime Minister Sam Hinds on the eve of the Linden killings (see the July 19 Stabroek News), that “I continue to look for quiet, resigned acceptance [by Lindeners, of the removal of the subsidy for electricity tariffs].”

Preposterous and laughable as these utterances might have been in other times and in other places, this is no time for laughing in Guyana.
