NSC / Arthur Chung Memorial Football … Uitvlugt beat Den Amstel on penalties to lift winner’s trophy

Uitvlugt Warriors defeated old rival Den Amstel on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in regulation time to win the inaugural National Sports Commission sponsored Arthur Chung Memorial Football competition organized by the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA).
The one-day event, which attracted the top four teams of the association, was played on Sunday last at the Leonora Track and Field Facility, Football Field.
Taking the third place were Eagles FC of Stewartville which beat Pouderoyen FC in an exciting match 3-2. In the final, Uitvlugt took the lead in the 80-minute encounter in the 15th minute, thanks to a Daniel Floy goal.
However, Den Amstel neutralised that advantage in the 36th minute thanks to a Andre Hector strike. Neither team were able to score during regulation time again and based on the rules, kicks from the penalty mark was the next option to determine the winner.
In the end, Uitvlugt were able to hit the back of the nets twice, whilst missing a similar amount of kicks, while Den Amstel muffed all four shots to hand Uitvlugt the top prize of $100,000; the losers pocketed, half that amount.
In the third place encounter, Eagles, behind goals from Adrian Adelph in the 38th minute, Chris Mackey in the 59th minute and Ezekiel Cox one minute later from the penalty spot, squeezed past Pouderoyen 3-2 to take the $30,000 third prize on offer. Pouderoyen did not walk away empty hand as they received $20,000; the match was played for sixty minutes.
Pouderoyen got their goals from Amaniki Buntin on 15 minutes and Lexroy Mansfield in the 47th minute.
Meanwhile, in the respective semi finals, Uitvlugt trounced Eagles 3-1 on account of a Jamal Harvey brace in the 28th and 30th minutes, Floy scored the other goal. Eagles’ lone effort came off the boot of Marvis Williams in the penultimate minute of the 40 minute clash.
The day’s first semi final saw Den Amstel needling Pouderoyen through Gavin Graham’s 24th minute goal.
The tournament was played in honour of Guyana’s first President who served from 1970 to 1980. President Chung, whose home village is Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara, was born on January 10, 1918 and died on June 23, 2008.
