Nurses protest for removal of GPHC CEO

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Scores of nurses from various departments of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday, June 17, took to the streets calling for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Khan to be fired from his post.

iNews understands that the nurses protest materialised after the GPHC’s management dismissed a matron from the hospital, allegedly without any proper explanation.

The nurses’ protest has left the hospital in a peculiar position with a skeletal staff tending to patients.

“Our Director of Health Services was dismissed wrongfully. She was dismissed without any reason…it’s a very bad decision made by the CEO and we will not stand by that, we will not accept that,” said Keith Alonzo, a Senior Departmental Supervisor within the GPHC.

He said that the nurses intend to continue their protest action until the decision taken by GHPC’s management has been rescinded. Additionally, the nurses also want Dr Zulfikar Bux to be fired.

“Dr Bux is the doctor in charge of the accident and emergency unit and we are opposed to that so he must go and Mr Khan must go…they don’t know anything about nursing,” said Alonzo.

When asked about the predicament that the GPCH has found itself in given the absence of the nurses, Alonzo said that he is quite aware of what it means for operations at GPHC.

“Nurses from every department, from paediatrics, from A&E, maternity they are all here…it will greatly affect the operations,” said the Supervisor.

Attempts made by iNews to contact Michael Khan for a comment on the issue proved futile.

Black nurses calling for 2 Indians to be fired.

They have to watch things like these and be sensitive to the implications.

Have they called for them to be fired before?

In the USA, Alonzo would be so fired for saying “Dr Bux is the doctor in charge of the accident and emergency unit and we are opposed to that so he must go and Mr Khan must go…they don’t know anything about nursing,” said Alonzo.
