Police and prison wardens on Saturday seized numerous cellular phones, knives and cigarette lighters during a search of the Georgetown Prison. Director of Prisons Dale Erskine could not be reached immediately for comment. Sources believe that the items were smuggled into the capital block, where convicted prisoners are held, with the help of a number of young prison wardens. The items were found by prison officers and police detectives stashed in one of the walls and a bucket. The find included 36 cellular phones, several phone chargers, numerous cigarette lighters, scissors, knives and a quantity of marijuana. No cocaine was found. No one has been charged in connection with possession of the items which are considered illegal in the possession. Sources told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) that a number of the prisoners have begun to implicate several warders. Back in February 2002, a prison warden Roxanne Whinfield was shot and suffered life-time brain damage by a prisoner when he and five others escaped from the Georgetown Prison. That prison break had marked the beginning of a four-year long violent crime spree that saw the escapees and other gang members being ensconced in Buxton. In June 2012, two female prison officers were placed under close arrest after a quantity of marijuana was allegedly found in their possession. |
