Knowing what I knoe about Vish and Chief, I am astounded by the highlighted .....who only contribute to his kind.
I know there is zero truth to this assertion and I'm bedeviled as to why would this comment be made, especially as it is in no way related to the tenor of the thread.

If Chief contributes only to Islamic charities, that's his choice. It's his money and he does what he thinks best. I have muslim friends and they do the same; doesn't mean they are wrong. We accept the man for who he is. Who are we to tell him how to spend his money? Do the jews give to muslim or hindu organisations?

Vish until the new committee start to show respect for the stalwart Pandit Ramlall then I encourage everyone to hold contributions.
As a veteran broadcaster pointed out the other night that myself and another muslim brother from Apple Shipping were involved along with Pandit Ramlall with the organizing committee for the very first Phagwah Day Parade in Richmondhill.

It is ironic that what is known as the annual Richmond Hill Phagwah started in Manhattan with Ramesh Kallicharran and Pandit Ramlall among the early planners. What is notable that a TV Station, Spotlight TV, with a heavy Muslim presence supported it in ways that are indelible. For 8 straight Spotlight TV had a float in that parade. We had luminaries join us, including Prime Minister Panday and Moses Nagamootoo, among others. Heck, Chief even enjoyed the festivities with us. I was reminded of climbing poles to get good vantage points for TV reportage (yes I handled the camera too), and did interviews on what the occasion meant, etc. The Al Abidin Masjid is along the parade route.
I say this trying to preempt any perceived dissonance between the two predominant religious communities among Guyanese-Americans living in Richmond Hill. Chief is not to be accused of anything other than helping more than just his own.
Well Kar I do not want to take any credit for this without mentioning that many of us regardless not being Hindu felt that we must support the organizers to have a parade back in the 80's.
Today so twenty something years later, despite their internal wranglings, the original team still say to me, when ever we meet, that they can never forget the support they got from me , Roshan, Haji Zakir and others whose names I cannot remember.
And yes Kari, you played your part as a novice journalist to record and then share with the audience in Guyana and Trinidad, the festivities of the parade on Liberty Ave. Let's not forget that COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT Spotlight TV AND IT'S OWNER who is still an active member of GNI.
Finally we all can make a difference by being supportive of a good cause. We do not have to belong to the same group but once we recognize it is good go give your support.

The good thing is this is America and many are unmasked very quickly.
tHE REAL PEOPLE WHO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE INVOLVED WITH GRASS ROOT ORGANIZATIONS, RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS and do not want political office. They have silently built Mandirs and Masjids, community centers and old people homes, they are our community leaders.
Some say that they serving this community and ask them what they have achieved other than getting themselves a job with a non proffit that they are involved in.. If you speak with the Phagwah Day committee they can give you a real lesson on some of these predators who come and promise things that they can never deliver.
