One country, two religions and three very telling pictures: The empty pews at churches just yards from an overcrowded mosque

  • Two photos show Sunday morning services in churches in East London
  • The third shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside a nearby mosque
  • The difference in numbers could hardly be more dramatic

Set aside the fact that our Queen is the Defender of the Christian Faith. Ignore the 26 Church of England bishops who sit in the House of Lords.

Pay no attention to the 2011 Census that told us 33.2 million people in England and Wales describe themselves as Christians.

For if you want a more telling insight into religion in the United Kingdom today, just look at these photographs. The story they tell is more revealing than any survey.

St Mary's, Cable Street
HUNDREDS OF WORSHIPPERS GATHER FOR FRIDAY PRAYERS AT THE BRUNE STREET MOSQUE

The photo on the left shows St Mary's Church in Cable Street while the photo on the right shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside a nearby mosque in Spitalfields, both in East London

What they show are three acts of worship performed in the East End of London within a few hundred yards of each other at the end of last month.

Two of the photos show Sunday morning services in the churches of St George-in-the-East on Cannon Street Road, and St Mary’s on Cable Street.

The third shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside the nearby mosque on the Brune Street Estate in Spitalfields.

The difference in numbers could hardly be more dramatic. At St George’s, some 12 people have congregated to celebrate Holy Communion.

When the church was built in the early 18th century, it was designed to seat 1,230.

Numbers are similar at St Mary’s, opened in October 1849. Then, it could boast a congregation of 1,000. Today, as shown in the picture, the worshippers total just 20.

While the two churches are nearly empty, the Brune Street Estate mosque has a different problem — overcrowding.

The mosque itself is little more than a small room rented in a  community centre, and it can hold only 100.

However, on Fridays, those numbers swell to three to four times the room’s capacity, so the worshippers spill out onto the street, where they take up around the same amount of space as the size of the near-empty St Mary’s down the road.

What these pictures suggest is that, on current trends, Christianity in this country is becoming a religion of the past, and Islam is one of the future.

In the past ten years, there has been a decrease in people in England and Wales identifying as Christian, from 71.7 per cent to 59.3 per cent of the population.

In the same period the number of Muslims in England and Wales has risen from 3 per cent of the population to 4.8 per cent — 2.7 million people.

And Islam has age on its side. Whereas a half of British Muslims are under 25, almost a quarter of Christians are approaching their eighth decade.

It is estimated that in just 20 years, there will be more active Muslims in this country than churchgoers — an idea which even half a century ago would have been utterly unthinkable.

Many will conclude with a heavy heart that Christianity faces a permanent decline in Britain, its increasingly empty churches a monument to those centuries when the teachings of Christ governed the thoughts and deeds of the masses.

On Sunday October 1, 1738, St George’s was packed twice during the day to hear the great evangelist John Wesley, who then preached at the church for the following week explaining, as he put it, ‘the way of salvation to many who misunderstood what had been preached concerning it’.

Today, there are no John Wesleys to fill up the pews. The church does its best, offering, for example, a monthly ‘Hot Potato Sunday’, during which the few congregants can discuss the  readings of the day over a baked potato.

Canon Michael Ainsworth of St George’s puts on a brave face when he says: ‘What we are  saying now is it is not just a matter of numbers. It is about keeping faith with the city and hanging in there — being part of the community.’

At St Mary’s, meanwhile, Rev Peter McGeary cannot explain why the numbers are so low: ‘It’s impossible to say, there are so many variables.’

When he is asked if he tries to boost his congregations, he simply replies: ‘We are not a company, we are a church.’

In contrast, there seems a remarkable energy attached to the mosque on Brune Street, which has been described as the ‘Mecca of the City’.

Here, come rain or shine, members of the  Bangladeshi community perform the Friday prayer of Jumma under the open sky. It is a communal act which will surely only grow in popularity.

Sadly, that’s not something that can be said of the two nearby churches, and unless they can reinvigorate their congregations they may finally end up being deconsecrated.

When that happens, such large buildings will be attractive spaces for those who can fill them.

One day, in a few decades, St George’s may well again be packed with worshippers — but they will not be Christians.

I had a good friend who was the Priest for St Margaret's Anglican Church at CORRIVERTON, his name was Farher Bill Pheely, he was an Englishman. His offical church residence was opposite the No 78 Masjid.

Back in the early 80's Eid was just o a few weeks after Easter. Father from across the street was listening to what was being said from the Masjid loudspeakers. ON THAT eID DAY A LITTLE OVER $60,000.00 was pledged as donation to the Masjid. Father Pheeley was blown away by the attendance and the money raised.  He said that  on Easter Sunday the collection at St mARGARET WAS JUST A LITTLE OVER $360.00 whilst the attendance was .005 % of that at the Masjid.

What Father witnessed that Eid Day prompted his early resignation from the church and he said he is returning to England to must study comparative(sp) religion. He wanted to learn about Islam.  Bill is very old now and is still a Chirstian.

Back to the topic proper. The Masjid I attend on a daily basis on 29th Street in Manhattan is right next to a Church and  has in excess of 300 worshipers  for every salaat during the day and evening. Now on Fridays that number swells to over  1550, guess what? The christian church do make a nice small change by renting us their auditorium.

It is a known fact that many Christian churches are being sold to Muslims and then converted into Mosques.

No other religion has so many people that pray in congregation on a daily basis like Islam.

In the beginning, when worshippers of Mohammad did their praises, it was wherever they were found-in the deserts, in the jungles or wherever else. During that time, the whole of Europe were given a guilt trip about large assemblance. And they succumbed to the charlatans of the day, believing that God only can be found in magnificient buildings.

Islam is on the same trip.

Immams are the new wave of charlatans. Up here where I live, they tell their followers what and how they should think-just the same beginnings of the Catholic Church. Just like the Latin BIble, Catholics were not alllowed to read it for lack of understanding. The Koran, in it Arabic form is similar to those who listen to its recitations, never really grasping the Arabic of the time it was written.

Mankind who are free of thought, knows that God is everywhere and cannot be found in mosques on Fridays.

Doan fool uself, a great many people going to hell. Just from reading the words of THE CHRIST-a lot a ppl are condemned. Christ is sad for He knows that Lucifer has man in his grasps.

Search yuhself and c if heaven is knocking at your door. There are no virgins in that heaven.

Christians are realizing the church is under the sky and not on bended knees in ritual supplication. Organized religion has lost its appeal in the west. People are religious in their lives and nurture a faith as they see fit. They do not care to go to the church every day or even weekly. That is and was always the christian way...personal   worship.

British women convert to Islam in droves

The Muslim population in England and Wales has increased by 80 percent since 2001 according to a British government census. With 2.7 million known adherents — 40 percent living in and around London — Islam has emerged as Britain’s second-largest religion after Christianity. Immigration accounts for most of the increase but conversions are on the rise making Islam the UK’s fastest-growing faith. Data from mosques indicates there may be more than 100,000 converts in Britain of various ethnicities. There were 5,000 conversions in 2012 of which three quarters were young females. What’s fueling this trend?

“Make me a Muslim,” a documentary that recently aired on BBC World, begins with “growing numbers of white British women are converting to Islam and asks but why would they want to give up all the freedoms their Western life allows?” It seeks to discover the challenges they face following the precepts of their new faith within a society known for its liberal, freewheeling lifestyle.

Take Guyana as your test case...why is there not mass conversion there? How about china or india? The shill cries of Muslims that "we are taking over the world" is just the empty cry of wishful thinking. For most people there is no appeal to Islam. If you want ritual and pretentiousness of perfection then you got it. Otherwise, the reality of a world where understanding is not static but increasing incrementally and different from all religious dictum is the norm.

We are heading out into the universe and these earth centered religions have all cease to be functional except for those concerned with mysticism and myth than with reality.

Don't fool yourselves those pictures are a show for the British public on what their immigration system has done to British society.  Get ready for all sorts of rules and regulations to reduce the muslim population in Britain and Europe in general.

Why do you think Choudary is still in Britain after making all sorts of speeches and comments.  Why has no British Neo-nazi walk up to him on the streets and try to bust his head open even though they hate him more than I hate Churchill.  Ask yourselves these questions.  Who benefits most from his speeches and comments.
