NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has spotted two mysterious lights coming from the surface of dwarf planet Ceres. The image of the two mysterious lights were taken from a distance of nearly 29,000 miles from the surface of Ceres. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft was launched in 2007 in order to study the planets of the asteroid belt that are located between Mars and Jupiter. The lights can be seen at the center of the dwarf planet Ceres which has been raising questions as to what is actually there.
After the spacecraft revealed one reflective spot on the surface of Ceres, another light came into view. It has prompted speculation that the planet “may be watching us and we are watching it”. Theories for the shining lights on dwarf planet Ceres include everything from mineral deposits to a frozen lake but no one knows for sure what it is yet. Chris Russell, principal investigator for the Dawn mission says, “This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations.” Dawn will continue its journey towards Ceres until March 6th where it will enter orbit around the planet.
