The appointment of Justice Winston Moore as Ombudsman has given the political opposition (particularly APNU) one less issue to wax-political. As such APNU's efforts to pour scorn on this latest development must be seen in this context. At first concerns were raised about staffing and provision of resources but these were however put to rest. Speaking to reporters following his swearing-in ceremony Moore said that discussions regarding staffing and resources were held between himself and senior Government Officials and that he in turn submitted a list of requirements to the Ministry of Public Service all of which have been met. He further noted that several persons who had worked at the office in the past have opted to return. “I have no qualms or misgivings as to staffing and resources” he said.
APNU's tune has now changed to whether or not Moore's office has the capacity to absorb some of the large backlog of cases pending and carry out its functions. We recall that for years the opposition listed the non-appointment of the Ombudsman as among the many ills plaguing the PPP/C's ability to administer good governance. Now that Moore has been appointed in that position it has changed its tune thereby exhibiting the type of political opportunism it is known for.
