The debate on the Hydro Electric Amendment Bill continues in the National Assembly, but without any contribution from the Opposition Parliamentarians – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC)

After approximately 2 ½ hour recess, Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman said the parliamentarians were working assiduously in trying to arrive at a compromise on the way forward on the Bill along with the motion to increase the debt ceiling.

According to the Speaker, “Many proposals were made, all have merit I believe, but none cannot see the light of day.”

The Speaker revealed the opposition’s intention not to contribute to the debate. During a press conference by APNU during the recess, they noted that they would not contribute to the debate on the Bill, but refused to answer questions on whether APNU will still support the Bill.

The debate on the Hydro Bill is currently ongoing, and the speakers from the government side will be the only ones contributing, while the Opposition remains silent in the House.

Government is hoping for the passage of this Bill, since it is a critical part of moving forward with the controversial Amaila Falls Hydro Project.

Chairman of the Alliance for Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, was appointed as the ‘Secretary’ of the Amaila Falls Hydro Inc., the Special Purpose Vehicle/Company created for the development, construction and operation of the US$858M Hydro Power plant.
Executive Member of the AFC, Cathy Hughes, the wife of Nigel Hughes, as recent as yesterday issued a press statement in which she was identified as the Public Relations Officer for Sithe Global, locally.
Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, when contacted said that he was aware that Hughes has an association with the company but said he did not know that he was Company Secretary.
