With five weeks left to go before Guyanese heads to the polls for national elections, political parties continue to be in a mad scramble to sign on supporters and other prominent personalities.

In the latest of such moves, Peter Ramsaroop, Chairman of Vision Guyana and Presidential Candidate of the Guyana People’s Partnership (GPP), who would have served in a number of other opposition parties, came out yesterday saying that he is confident that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is the “best and only choice for all Guyanese”.

“As a former Presidential Candidate campaigning for continued changes to Guyana, I have advocated for key shifts in our economic vision. I strongly believe Guyana can become a transport-led economy.” Ramsaroop, in a release issued by the PPP/C yesterday, said that the decision was taken after perusing the party’s ‘2011 and Beyond Manifesto’ and finding it refreshing.

Key programmes including a deep water harbour, completion of the road to Brazil and certain tax reliefs are all in the plan under a Ramotar-led government and which attracted him.

“In addition, the Presidential Candidate has promised a review of the entire tax system including the VAT which I strongly believe must happen.

I fully support these initiatives.

In addition, as a leading member of the opposition ranks, I believe Guyana needs a period of political peace and working alongside each other to ensure that all Guyanese benefit.”

According to Ramsaroop, his discussions with Ramotar have given him the assurance that a strong desire and will exists in the party for all to work together, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Guyana’s People Partnership has indicated that it has expelled Ramsaroop from its membership, in the wake of his decision to switch from the APNU coalition and endorse the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.

A release issued by the party stated that the Executive met on Monday and “unanimously decided to expel and revoke the membership of Peter Ramsaroop from the GPP.”

“In light of the fact that the Guyana’s People Partnership is a member of the APNU coalition and that it is obvious that the former head of GPP Peter Ramsaroop is actively endorsing and supporting the ruling party…

the Executive has decided to revoke the membership of Mr. Peter Ramsaroop who for years fought against and spoke of the evils of the PPP/C (and) now has decided to join ranks with the enemy,” the release said.

The statement added that the GPP stands united as a member of the APNU coalition “and the leadership of the GPP looks forward to continuing our campaign so that come November 28 the Guyanese people will elect a new government of National Unity and Reconciliation.” “The GPP Executive and Membership  supports our Presidential candidate David Granger and Prime Ministerial Candidate Rupert Roopnaraine and looks forward to working with the other partners of APNU towards winning the November 28 General and Regional Election.”
