Osmond Cummings fourth Memorial Football Extravaganza… Botofago U18 and U23 outgun Eagles United and Amelia’s Ward

Botofago Football Club (BFC) defeated their Under-18 and Under-23 counterparts in the Osmond Cummings fourth Memorial football extravaganza Sunday last at the Silvertown All Stars Sports Club Ground.
Under the theme, “Unite, Develop and Distribute”, Botofago’s Under 18 got the better of Eagles United FC 2-0. From the sound of the first whistle Botofago dominated the game with some early shots to the goal; while some went wide of the goal posts, Eagles Keeper made some great saves. Although the game was reduced to one hour because of the inclement weather, Eagles were able to hold their opponents at nil all at half time.
Coming back into the game with fire in their eyes Amar Jones booted the first goal in favour of Botofago and soon after Antwaine Gill scored the second before the game ended 2-Nil in favour of Botofago.
It was all Botofago again in the Under-23 clash, they won 4-1 against Amelia’s Ward FC. From the onset Botofago were determined to make it a double and showed prowess and dominance. In the 5th minute Botofago went ahead after Tevin Thompson scored their first goal. From then it was a battle for goals but Botofago showed their dominance and two more goals were scored before half time when Wayne Wilson beat the goalkeeper, sending the ball straight to the back of the net; the first half ended 3-Nil in favour of Botofago.
At the sound of the whistle for the second half, Kelon Primo of Amelia’s Ward scored taking the score to 3-1, but shortly after Tevin Thompson of Botofago sealed the win by rocking the nets with a right footer from the 18 yards box to make it 4-1. At the end of the regulation time the score read 4-1 in favour of Botofago FC.
The Under-18 team received the winning trophy and replicas. The winning Under-23 team a trophy and replicas. The loosing teams received medals. Emerging as the MVP for the U23 was Tevin Thompson of Botofago, Ojani Whittington was adjudged the best Youth Player, Best defence went to Kendall Lewis of Eagles United, Botofago’s Kester Johnson was given the nod for Best goalkeeper and Antwaine Gill received the MVP U18 prize.
The teams were met by Nigel ‘Mice’ Cummings and DeAndre Cummings, son of the late Osmond Cummings, who also did the honour of kicking off the ball.
Nigel ‘Mice’ Cummings in his remarks said that he was hoping to have the tournament run as a league this year but there were some hiccups and it didn’t materialize but come 2018 it will be done as a League so all the teams in Linden will benefit. The Acting President of the UDFA sanctioned the league and committed to assist. Cummings noted that he wants nothing he will provide all the trophies, medals, balls and whatever else is needed. The trophy for the league was on display.
Cummings also thanked US based Farlin Da Silva, former footballer and Andrew Porter in assisting with balls and gears for Botofago FC.
Osmond Cummings who was also a dominoes enthusiast had a tournament in his memory played on the same day.
Bidders emerged winners with 77 games, WEE second with 76 games and 110 Street in the cellar with 66 games. Bidders received a trophy and $35,000, second place received $12,000 and a trophy and a trophy and $5,000 went to the third place winner.
The Cummings family also fed the children in the community and distributed backpacks with pens, pencils, exercise books and other school stationery. (Jacquey Bourne)
