Over 250 successfully complete BIT training in Region Two

Yet another batch of youths and single parents has graduated after completing skills training through the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security under the Board of Industrial Training (BIT.)

At a graduation ceremony hosted at the Essequibo Technical Institute, Region Two, on Friday, 252 persons graduated, 176 from the National Training Programme for Youth Empowerment (NTPYE) and 76 from the Single Parent Training Programme after completing 6-12 months training in a number of skill areas such as cosmetology and catering.

Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir, told the graduants that their graduation should signal a personal accomplishment for them, a step in the right direction towards further empowering themselves and urged them to continue to educate themselves.

“We have a new horizon out there, new opportunities,” he told the graduants, “you can’t wait for them to knock on your door…go out and look for it,” adding that the same dedication with which they committed and applied themselves to the BIT training, must be now be taken, as they move into the workforce.

NTYPE training is about making a difference in the lives of youths, Nadir said, more so affording those that require it, a second chance and the ministry and the staff of the BIT programme are pleased to afford this opportunity for empowerment.

An examination of the People’s Progressive Party Civic 2006 manifesto, he said, will show the commitment that was made towards ensuring youths, more so, school drop outs this second chance to a promised future.

The success of the NTPYE, training, Minister Nadir said, speaks to the milestone achievement that the Government has accomplished with regards to changing and making a difference in the lives of youths.

Over the last five years, the ministry has invested $1.6B in the NTYPE programme and has successfully trained thousands. Last year 2000 youths countrywide graduated from the ministry’s NTYPE programme and the ministry is again targeting another 2000 this year, Nadir said.

The Government has also committed to assisting single parents, Minister Nadir said, and has invested heavily to ensure that single parents that show the desire to be trained are facilitated with programmes such as BIT’s, Single Parent training.

He said that with the initialization of the Women of Worth programme, Government has taken an even further step towards assisting single parents, adding that the programme has benefitted over 12,000 single parents.

He told them that the administration is now making a bold promise that even more opportunities will be opening up for youths and single parents in the future.

Seventy seven of the graduants have already been employed and 15 others are enrolled in further training at higher learning institutions. The graduants are from the Essequibo Coast, the Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam.
