Over 5,000 persons have registered during the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ongoing claims and objections, according to GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward.

November 04, 2019 is the final date for claims while citizens have until November 11 to make objections.

GECOM has recorded a total of 26,300 transactions during the claims and objections period which began on October 01.

Ward said there has been 5,636 new registrations; 14, 474 transfers; 2,639 corrections/changes; 2,400 replacements; 651 photo retakes and 500 objections.

Claims and objections allow for persons above 18 years who are not on the National Register of Registrants to get registered and for others to update their information on the list.

The process followed a truncated period of House-to-House registration which was held in July-August.

From Thursday last, the Commission also began to display data from the House-to-House registration process for claims and objections.

During the curtailed house to house registration, over 370,000 persons were registered.

On the Preliminary List of Electors, there are 646, 625 names.

GECOM Commissioners have stated that the newest information will be used to formulate the voters’ list.

Georgetown Chamber concerned at GECOM plan to remove 28,000 names

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) yesterday  noted with β€œdeep concern” the decision of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to have some 28,000 persons be removed from the voters’ list as they have not uplifted their National Identification Cards.

β€œThe GCCI wishes to highlight that such a decision would be regarded as unconstitutional given that this is in contravention to the Chief Justice’s ruling on this matter which is very explicit. Secondly, an Identification Card is not a requirement to vote since registered voters can also vote by way of presenting a valid passport or other form of Identification”, the GCCI said.
