[www.inewsguyana.com] – The first week of the 7th cycle of continuous registration by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has seen 925 new registrants, while 222 persons have made corrections to their information and there were 152 transfers.

According to GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Richard Francois the process continues to flow smoothly with no hiccups thus far. He told iNews during a telephone interview that because it is the first week of the exercise, the numbers will not be high.

This cycle will last for approximately three months which will see its conclusion on February 21, 2015.

GECOM has maintained that this cycle of registration was in no way a response to calls made by the People’s Progressive Party Civic.

Meanwhile, as it relates to GECOM’s preparedness for general elections, the PRO explained that when or if a date is announced, the Commission will play its part to ensure its mandate is carried out effectively.

“We have to wait until we have an announcement, because we don’t know when it is or when it will be, but there are some standard things that we have to do, that we will do,” Francois told iNews.

Only recently the Commission met with senior representatives of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) who expressed satisfaction pertaining to the state of preparedness of GECOM as it relates to the conduct of General and Regional or Local Government Elections, should a date be set for either at short notice.

It was during that meeting that GECOM again underscored its readiness to efficiently and effectively manage Elections should they be announced at short notice.
